The 5th Annual Lower Columbia Fall Classic Walleye Derby

was held at the Port of Camas/Washougal and sponsored by Trident Marine was a fantastic success. We had 22 teams that decided to stay and fish. The bite was difficult at best
during the week preceding the tournament, but what a change on tournament Day,
WOW! The bite turned on; boy did it turn on. Those who decided not to fish
really lost out because there were fantastic weights brought in each day.

Saturday day One: The teams blasted off at 6:00 AM and headed for their own
particular spot. Each team was allowed to weigh 6 fish each day with only 2
fish over 24 inches. The team of Davis and Legg did a number to the rest of
the field. Fishing above Skamania Island they kicked butt in a big way. They
weighed in all their fish by 11:30 A.M. and were done for the day with an
astounding weight of 43.12 pounds and they had a big fish of 12.45 pounds.
They got most weight and big fish for the first day.

This was a day they could do no wrong and they were popping fish when everyone else could not get them.
They had two big fish and 4 in the 23-inch class and the only way they could
have improved their catch was to put 2- 15 pounders in the well. Man it was a
great day to be on the water. Their method was to pull worm harnesses
downstream and crankbaits upstream and what they chose was right on the money!

It can’t get any better then that!

Second big fish for the day went to Cal Burkhardsmeier and Larry McClintock
when Cal nailed an 11.59 pounder, and it was their first fish of the day. They
also weighed a 9.21 pounder but could not capitalize on their position by
catching some smaller slot fish. There were 8 teams that weighed over 20
pounds of fish the first day.

Sunday day two: It starts all over and it was a little tougher but almost a
repeat of day one. Mike and John got 30.87 pounds but the heavy limit went to
Bobby Jones and Nick Puryear with a weight of 35.75 pounds, which ultimately
put them in second place for the tournament.

Big fish for day two and for the tournament went to Cal Burkhardsmeier and
Larry McClintock when Larry caught a 12.94 pounder and it was his first fish
over 10 pounds and what a time to get it. Cal and Larry aced out Dave Wolfe’s
12.18 pounder, which gave Dave second place for big fish. There were 9 teams
that weighed over 20 pounds on the second day.
