Texas Walleye Association Canton, OK Follow Up
Another TWA tourney and even more difficult conditions, this time the fish were more cooperative (for some). Saturday was not a day for the fair-weather tournament angler, the cold-front and 40 mph winds that had come down on Canton two days prior to stop number two of the Texas Walleye Association had put a grim outlook on the tournament for many. The anticipated turnout was high and with the weather it was much different. I can’t imagine those OK anglers are that afraid of some TX fisherman. We tried to pre-fish on Friday, but would have been better off fishing from shore as some anglers did near the dam looking for spots holding fish. The OK Wildlife Dept. had the nets out for the spawning females and it was going to be a task fishing around them, especially for those of us who don’t like the J word. Saturday came and we were tenth in the blast off and the weather was still cold and windy. The best part of the day was racing everyone to the spot on the dam where the fish were. (I heard the prop a few times.) Everyone knew there were fish at the Dam and I had wanted to find other fish, but did not succeed in pre-fishing or on tourney day. We worked the dam for about an hour and it was too much for us. We headed north up the river and tried in the trees and further up. After a full day of waves and wind it was finally time to call it quits. We headed in and watched the weigh-in with 9 of 16 teams weighing fish and only two 5 fish limits weighed in by the Audrain and McWilliams teams. They were hard fought and well deserved, my hats off to Kevin (Texeye) and Kalin Audrain for another strong showing out of that Tracker Targa, 2nd (1st at Conchas). Hank and John McWilliams had a stellar showing weighing in the heaviest bag right at 13#s edging out the Audrain’s weight of 12.95#s. John Bramhall (Big John) and Scott Jolly had the big fish honors with a 5.5 #er. Don Bell (Jigginman) and Lloyd Griswald finished off the top 3. Rumors have it that Red/White Jigs, Rogues, Yellow/Orange/Chartruese jigs, and Husky Jerks were the bait of choice. (seems like anything worked if you were in the right spot) The next TWA Tournament is on the home turf of most TWA boys Lake Meredith, TX but we plan on giving them a run for their money (Golden and I will be fishing this one). I expect the Murphy brothers to get even with the whoopin’ they took on their home lake from those TX boys. This weekend we are headed back to the Butte for some Striper action and then it is off to Erie to pre-fish the PWT Port Clinton. We’ll be back in NM the 16th of April and still have many spots open for the spring Striper action. The Walleye seem to be picking up slowly and should be in full swing by late April. Check
