Texas Walleye Association Lake Meredith Follow Up Story
by Dan Turner
Although
Lake Meredith water levels are at a record low, TWA anglers in the
May 22 Lake Meredith Tournament found the fish as fat and healthy
as seen at Meredith in many years. In pre-fishing, several teams reported
catching tremendous limits of fish in the upper part of the lake,
but after two solid days of high winds muddying the water, the only
active fish came from the clearer water near the dam. The teams who
adjusted accordingly were rewarded with limits of fish. In fact, a
5 fish limit did not even place some teams in the top ten.
The father
and son team of Jim and Jimmy Welch of Fritch claimed the $560 first
place prize with 8.84 lbs and the big fish pot of $140 with a 2.58
lb walleye. The two Jims caught their fish on pink and white spinner
rigs.
Kevin
and Kalin Audrain of Fritch used jigs tipped with worms and minnows
to weigh in 7.58 lbs for second and $350.
Bobby
Reining of Fritch and Brett Mills of Panhandle came in with 7.22 lbs
to secure third place and $210. They caught their fish on chartreuse
spinners and jigs tipped with crawlers.
Fourth
place went to J.D. Carr and Chuck Weston of Fritch with 7.02 lbs.
Brent
Breznik and Dewayne Wilkerson of Borger weighed in fifth with 6.71
lbs.
Brian
Stangel and Todd Teune of Albuquerque, New Mexico were in at sixth
with 6.55 lbs.
Scott
Golden of Walleye Central.com came down from Fort Collins, Colorado
and teamed with Jim O'Connor of Amarillo to claim seventh with 6.13
lbs.
Eighth
went to Jeff and Ron Alexander of Fritch and Plains, Kansas with 6.05
lbs edging out Russell Wilkerson and Vince Martin of Amarillo with
5.96 lbs.
Rounding
out the top ten was Donnie Bell and Arwin Cowan of Fritch with 5.76
lbs.
The next
tournament will be the TWA Lake Meredith Classic on June 26-27.
This tournament
will have a lucrative pay-out with an additional $750 added to the
entry fee pot for the winner on each day. Rather than a combined weight
tournament, a separate winner will be declared on each day of the
Classic. A hamburger fry will also be served to all participants and
their families at the pre-tournament meeting at the Lake Meredith
Marina on Friday, June 25th at 7 PM. The Classic is open to all anglers
and not just TWA members. For more information on the Classic, contact
J.D. Carr at 857-0084 (Cottontop@aol.com) or Dan Turner at 935-3176
