388 Anglers participated in Canada’s largest live release walleye tournament, which offered $235,000.00 in prizes. Winners of the Centennial Anglers Cup, Robert Kallbom and Richard Kallbom of Whitecourt, Alberta took home the $100,000.00 FIRST PLACE prize. The father and son team were elated as they took to the stage to receive their Cheque and trophies.
Robert Kallbom and Richard Kallbom of Whitecourt, AlbertaTake home the $100,000.00 Cheque for their two day efforts catching 12.88 pounds on day one and 13.08 on day two.
The Point Steakhouse and Marina, located just outside of the town of Slave Lake, 2.5 hours north of Edmonton, Alberta was home to the Anglers for over a week including the pre-fishing. Lesser Slave Lake is 70 miles long and offers an incredible Walleye fishery. This big water lake can see some significant wave action, as it did on day two with wind of 30 kph and gusting to 40. The North shore saw waves as large as 12’. Two boats succumbed to the water and had to be retrieved from the lake with an excavator. One swamped Angler said, “Lets get this boat fixed, I got another hour of fishing to go” as he laughed. There was a significant portion of anglers suffering seasickness as well on day two. This did not dampen their enthusiasm to catch the plentiful walleye. Some concerns were expressed by the Anglers that the fishery seemed to be in trouble, as they seemed skinny, weak and very hungry. Autopsies of the morts revealed empty stomachs. The only food found in the stomachs was the minnows and leaches supplied by the Anglers themselves. They raved about catching 200 – 300 fish a day. Which made for entertaining angling.
The Anglers Cup regulations state a 51 cm fish is the minimum length that can be brought into the weigh in. A four fish per day limit met tournament regulations and total weight of 8 fish over the two days puts the Top 30 teams into the money. The difference between 30th place and 1st place was 3.93 pounds. One good fish and it was anybody’s game. Boats left the Marina July 1st and 2nd at 4:30 am and waited off shore for the shotgun start at 6:00 am. Spectators lined the shore to watch the parade of boats leave after the National Anthems are played. Awesome footage of the flights leaving can be viewed at www.anglerscup.com. The FINAL weigh-in started at noon on day 2 on the PolarKraft stage, to the relief of the Anglers who braved 6 hours of the high waves. The top ten teams were held back and brought up in grand fashion with their bounty. All Scores can also be found on www.liveleaderboard.com.
