Papineau and Janny Lead Wire to Wire

The team of Jay Janny and Kim "Chief" Papineau took Team of the Year honors and First Place at the Cabela's MWC Lake Erie event that took place out of Dunkirk, NY this weekend.

Pulling dipsey divers and crawler harnesses with a 15' lead west of the launch for two days while battling high waves and windy conditions, the team of Janny and Papineau lead wire to wire to take honors on Lake Erie for the Cabela’s MWC with a two day total of 71.53 pounds setting a new MWC total weight record.

Most of the teams that took checks were pulling “low and slow” with crawler harnesses in 70-100 feet of water and targeting walleyes in the 50-60 foot range.

Some teams were pulling leadcore and crankbaits targeting more active fish higher in the water column.

Ohio Pros Steve Carlson and Jim Stedke pulled copper crawler harnesses behind dipsey divers 12 miles northeast of Dunkirk harbor at an average of 1.7 MPH and handled over 20 fish each day but not enough to make the cut in their first MWC event. They finished just out of the money with over 25 pounds each day…. which is enough to pull a check on any other lake that I know of.

The MWC wrapped up its regular season with the Dunkirk event.

The World Walleye Championship, for those that qualified in 2005, will be held at Prairie du Chien, WI on September 28 – Oct 1, 2006.
