| | 2005 Oregon Governor’s Cup results
The Oregon Governor’s Cup Walleye tournament was held on September 10th and 11th in Umatilla Oregon. This tournament was the third and final tournament of the year in the Columbia River Walleye Circuit. All of the tournaments are catch and release. One hundred and Four fishermen and women entered the tournament, with entries from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Wisconsin. Each two person team pays an entry fee of $230. They may weigh in up to six fish per day, only 2 of which may be over 24”. The total payout for the weekend came in at $13,930!
On Saturday the weather was unpredictable, with showers and wind rolling through. Only four teams weighed in a six fish limit on Saturday. A total of 144 fish were weighed in with an average weight of 3.14 pounds. The team of Kevin Newcomb (Kennewick, WA) and Justin Sloan (Richland, WA) showed that they had what it took. They boated an impressive 39.44 pounds to take over the day one lead. They also landed the largest walleye of the day at 13.14 pounds. This one bite guaranteed them a check for $780. Larry Oleson (Wise Rapids,WI) and Frank Nemec (Patterson Washington) had the second heaviest bag of the day at 22.84#. The third place team for Saturday was Greg Osborne (Coulee City, WA) and Kimo Gabriel (Hermiston, OR). They weighed in 19.84#.
Sunday was a little better day as far as the weather was concerned. The big bag brought to the scale on Sunday belonged to the team of Chris Mitchell and Jeannie Saporito (both of Kennewick WA). They weighed five fish for total weight of 25.14 pounds, including the largest walleye of the day at 10.60 pounds, bringing their total weight of the weekend to 33.32 pounds. Still this would only make their total weight heavy enough to earn them fifth place for the weekend.
Newcomb and Sloan proved that consistency is what it takes to win a tournament. They brought another 24.42 pounds to the scale on Sunday, bringing their total weight to and impressive 63.86 pounds for the weekend. Oleson and Nemec brought in 22.92#’s and ended up with a total weight of 45.76 pounds for the weekend, giving them a second place finish. Greg Osborne and his partner managed to haul in 32.58 pounds for the weekend, putting them in seventh place for the tournament and earning Greg title of Fisherman of the Year for the Columbia River Walleye Circuit.
The Columbia River Walleye Circuit names a “Fisherman of the year” at the Governor’s Cup each year. The winner is determined by points that are awarded at all three circuit events through out the year. The winners receive a $2000 cash bonus, $500 from each tournament and $500 from Smoker Craft Boats.
This year the guy to watch was Greg Osborne. Things were looking pretty good for him at the scales on Saturday. The team of Stan and Steve Romig were just one point behind Greg in the standings race. They usually do quite well in this tournament. Unfortunately Stan and Steve showed up empty handed at the weigh in.
Three Hundred and Two walleye were weighed in over the weekend for a total weight of 940.55#! All but two teams brought fish to the scales.
