| | September 30, 2005-Prairie Du Chien, Wisc.- The Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit World Walleye Championship concluded its second day Friday with Michigan duo Doug Lampen and Jeff Russell jumping into the lead.
Weather cleared and temperatures rose into the mid 70’s Thursday. Which was a welcome change for anglers hoping the post cold front bite would improve. Unfortunately that didn’t seem to be the case. 7 of the 60 team field were able to bring in a full 5 fish limit. “Fishing was pretty tough it took every minute of today for us to get our 5 fish.” said angler Doug Newhoff.
Fishing may be tough for some but the team of Doug Lampen of Allegan, Mich. and Jeff Russell of Grand Haven, Mich. proved there are some good fish out there. Doug and Jeff added to yesterday’s 12.97lbs with 5 walleyes weighing 13.27lbs Thursday to take the lead with a total weight of 26.24lbs. “We improved from yesterday’s weight which is encouraging for us. Hopefully we can improve again tomorrow: “We had the 3rd big fish yesterday and the 2nd big fish today so we’re obviously happy. We do have some pressure from the local fisherman and opening day of duck season is tomorrow so we are a little worried but hopefully it will work out.” said Russell.
Sitting in second place is Wednesday’s leaders Jim Trow of Ames Iowa and Scott Adelotte of Garner Iowa with a two day total of 24.88lbs.
Doug Newhoff of Waterloo, IA and Walleye Central contributor John Balla with a 2 day total weight of 17.61lbs. This is the teams 3rd straight MWC Championship fishing together so they are no stranger to the pressure.
Finishing out the top 5 is the duo of tod Conner of Hopkins, MI and Michael Bringedahl of Fuitport, MI with their two day total weight of 15.39lbs.
Tomorrow is the 3rd and final day of the Championship and the fishing should be getting better. The weather is stabilizing and temperatures are rising. Big fish have been known to frequent these two pools on the river so anything could happen. Fishing will resume at 8:00am CST Saturday and will conclude at 4:00pm. Weigh in will be held in the Cabela’s parking lot in Praire Du Chien with public encouraged to come out and cheer on the anglers as they bring in their fish. There could be some serious fireworks with over $100,000 in cash prizes at stake, including a Grand Prize of $25,000 going to the winner. Not to mention the title of “World Walleye Champs”.
