Texas Walleye Association Holds Canton Tournament and Conchas Tournament Results
The Texas Walleye Association has scheduled the second stage of their 2006 Tournament Trail on Saturday, May 6 with a tournament at Canton Lake, Oklahoma. This tournament should be at the peak of the hot bite at Canton. Thus, heavy weights are expected. All TWA tournaments are two man team tourneys and leading teams for the season will qualify for invitations to the 2007 Cabelas National Team Championship. The TWA was given 4 team spots for this years National Championship at Lake Sharpe, South Dakota. The Canton tournament will begin with a 5:00 AM breakfast and pre-meeting at the Overlook Cafe on the south end of the dam and conclude with a weigh in at 3:00 PM. The cost of the tournament is $100 a team with an optional $10 big fish pot. The annual TWA membership is $50 per team.
Teams from 4 states gathered at Conchas, NM for the first tournament of 2006. For April, fishing was good as a 5 fish limit wouldn’t even insure a spot in the top 10 placings. 1stplace and $560 went to John McWilliams and Kenneth Sibley of Borger with 12.94 lbs. They also took the big fish pot of $140 with a nice 4.17 lb walleye. 2nd and $350 went to the father /son team of Bryan and Scott Garrison of Kismet, Ks with 12.70 lbs. 3rd and $210 went to Robert Reining, Panhandle and Brett Mills, Borger with 11.69 lbs. The rest of the top ten was: 4th Cody and Dale White, Clovis, NM with 10.27 lbs; 5th Jim O’Connor, Amarillo and Ed Rodriquez, Fritch with 9.98 lbs; 6th Jim and James Welch, Fritch with 9.44 lbs;7th J.D. Carr and Chuck Weston, Fritch with 8.94 lbs; 8th Mark and Montie Murphy, Woodward, Ok with 8.81 lbs; 9th Jeff and Ron Alexander, Amarillo with 8.80 lbs; and 10th Dan Turner, Dumas and David Turner, Bristow, Ok with 8.07 lbs.
