Bruce Samson Takes Day 2 Lead at Ottertail by Jake Kraus

Wednesday, June 14, 2006-Ottertail Lake, MN-  Bruce Samson brought in a strong 4 fish basket weighing 12.86 pounds Wednesday to take the day 2 lead in the PWT Super Pro Series on Ottertail Lake, MN.  Bruce Samson’s two day total of 24.81 pounds sets him on top of an a field of 60 of the nations elite walleye anglers.

Samson, who was in second place behind Daryl Christensen on Tuesday needed to have another solid weight Wednesday to keep up and he did just that.  Of the 60 anglers fishing the tournament only 4 brought in double digit weights and Samson was one of them.  “We had a good day.  The wind picked up in the afternoon which made it a little harder to fish but, my partner did great and it all worked out” said Samson.

Sitting in a close second place is Daryl Christensen of Montello WI, with his 2 day total of 8 walleyes weighing 23.85 pounds.  “ I found a spot where I am catching fish over 20 inches consistently.  Unfortunately we can only weigh two fish over that mark.  So I have gone to this spot early both days and caught my over fish.  There was a 27 incher there yesterday, and my two big fish were caught there today.  We were catching a lot of fish over the 20 inch mark there.  You can’t just keep pounding those fish and expect them to stay there. So we left them for tomorrow.” exclaimed Christensen.

Mark Christianson jumped into third place with his tournament best 1 day weight of 14.22 pounds giving him a 2 day total of 8 walleyes weighing 18.09 pounds.  Mark also weighed the biggest fish of tournament, a 6.62 pound bruiser caught in the final minutes of the day.

Leaping up from 49th place to then number 4 spot was Mark Martin of Twin Lake, MN with his Wednesday catch of 12.94 pounds giving him a 2 day total of 8 walleyes weighing 16.03 pounds.

Taking the lead in the co-angler division is Bruce Boyne of Wadena, MN with his 8 walleyes weighing 21.06 pounds.  Bruce is also credited with catching the big fish of the tournament so far, weighing in at 6.62 pounds.

In 2nd place is Kellly Hamson of Cushing, MN with a 2 day total of 8 walleyes weighing 19.12 pounds.

Rounding out the top 3 co-anglers is Brian Fiskum of Champlin, MN with his 8 fish weighing 18.65 pounds.

Ottertail lake is a very unique lake for the elite tournament trail.  It’s not a very big lake, 15,000 acres or so.  But it is filled with structure and humps.  “There are 71 humps out there.  It may be one of the smaller lakes we fish by the acreage but I think it actually FISHES like one of the biggest, because of all the structure.” stated tournament director Charlie Moore.

Tuesday anglers were faced with a front that moved in early in the week which has since moved on but not with out the wind that normally follows.  Although not horrible, the wind Wednesday blew consistent throughout the afternoon which made boat control a little more work.  A lot of the anglers are fishing immediate break lines on the humps, and staying right on the breaks proved to be a little tricky.

The fisherman are using a number a techniques in a number of depths.  Many are rigging across the tops, some are jigging the breaks, others are fishing weed growths and some are using planer boards and pulling cranks to catch their fish.

Take off is at 8:00am at the Pelican Boat launch and weigh-in begins Thursday around 5:30pm. For full results and daily photos visit the Live Leaderboard at: http://www.liveleaderboard.com
