Port Clinton, OH 5/10/07
The first morning of the MWC's "Walleye Madness Sweet 16" event, 32 anglers waited patiently at the docks, and discussed the weather. Why the delay? Thick fog...Pea Soup fog! No one would be going anywhere fast this morning. Kristine Houghtman is playing it safe, and keeping all the anglers in the harbor until the visibility is better. At 10 am, the fog finally started to lift, and the teams were sent out with final instructions to stay aware, and stay safe. It's 11 am now and the fog is all gone. All that is left is a blue sky and sweet sunshine! The anglers are going to have excellent weather today! This is a bracketed event, meaning that each team is in all actuality only fishing against one other team today. The team that wins their bracket, will advance on to fish tomorrow. The top four teams tomorrow will advance to fish on day 3, where two of those teams will be done fishing at 1pm. The top two teams left in competition after 1pm on Saturday, will fish until 6pm, where the champions will be decided at weigh in.
Here on the Western Basin of Lake Erie, the fish are plentiful. The tremendous hatch from 2003 are in that 20-22 inch stage right now, making a day of fishing, or should I say, "catching", a ton of fun!
However, these two man teams that qualified to fish this event are looking for the big females that are on a trek back to the cooler waters of the Eastern Basin. As the water temperatures rise, the Walleye migrate to the deeper waters for the summer months.
Come Fall, the Walleye will start their migration back to the Western Basin, where they will wait for the right time to spawn again. The anglers who figure out the path that the big girls are using to journey back to the East end will easily prevail in this tournament. Stay tuned to Walleye Central's Live Leaderboard at http://www.liveleaderboard.com ....at the end of today, only 8 teams will be left in play.
Anglers are due back at the ramp at 6pm, so the weigh in should start approximately at 6:15pm.
