Ninety boaters and co anglers set out this morning for the second day of the FLW Walleye League Championship, in hopes of catching a few of the Mississippi River Walleye and Saugers that seem to be eluding the anglers this week. “It’s a really tough bite”, would be repeated by almost every angler who crossed the stage this afternoon. No one caught a 5 fish limit today. A cold front blew in early this morning out of the Northwest, and it’s expected to be near freezing by morning. Temps are expected to be in the mid to high 30’s by take off time in the morning. The high should only be in the high 50’s to low 60’s by late afternoon. The leader on day one, Bill Shimota, who continues his lead into day three, offered this… “Unlike lakes, cold fronts do not have the same effect on rivers, so I don’t think it’s going to hurt my bite tomorrow. I have a couple of spots that are producing, so it should be a good day tomorrow”.
The top ten boaters and co anglers after today’s weigh in were:
On the Boater side: 1. Bill Shimota of Lonsdale, MN 2. Dan Krukow of Rochester, MN 3. Don Marx of Rockford, MN 4. Jonathan Shoemaker of Elyria, OH 5. Eric D. Olson of Red Wing, MN 6. Dusty Minke of New Brighton, MN 7. Lamarr Van Dame of Fargo, ND 8. Paul Fallaw of McHenry, IL 9. Tim J. Fields of Rochester, MN 10. Chad Wertepny of Green Bay, WI
On the Co Angler side: 1. Mike Eiden of New Haven, IN 2. Steve Keller of Beloit, WI 3. Eldon Olson of Mason City, IA 4. Aaron Mestad of Deerwood, MN 5. Todd Wedmann of Audubon, MN 6. Jamie Reverman of Maple Park, IL 7. Kenneth Dage of Maple Park, IL 8. Brandon McCarthy of Nekoosa, WI 9. Jamie Nieland of Albany, MN 10. Raymond Chase of Friendship, WI
Because of dirty water conditions, due to recent heavy rains, “Handlining” and “Polelining” are the dominating presentations here this week. Stickbaits in size 9 are the ticket right now. The best colors are oranges, firetiger, pinks, and whites.
To make a tough bite even worse, is the fact that everyone must adhere to a slot limit where fish that are between 20 and 27 inches must be returned to the water. Those size fish are protected by state law. Several anglers who only brought one or two fish to the scales said that they caught several fish, but that there were either “too big or not big enough”!
Morning ceremonies begin approximately at 6:45am at the boat launch in Sunset Park tomorrow. The top ten teams will take off at exactly 7am and will return to the docks at 3pm. They will then be taken over to the WalMart, on John Deere Parkway, by police escort, where the weigh in begins at 4pm.
Please join us for another exciting afternoon at the live weigh in, or watch it here on Walleye Central to see who will be taking home the brand new fully rigged Ranger 621 powered by either Evinrude or Yamaha (boater side), and a G-3 V185F (co angler side), also powered by either an Evinrude or Yamaha for their first place finish!
