“Tough” was the word that all but one team used at the Texas Walleye Association’s Fall Tournament at Lake Meredith on October 13. “Tough” was how all teams found the launching conditions at Meredith.
The warmer than usual early fall temperatures also made the fishing very tough as only nine teams were even able to bring a walleye to the scales.
The exception with a truly phenomenal day of fishing was the team of Ed Rodriguez of Fritch and David McWilliams of Borger who came within a quarter of a pound of setting a new Texas Walleye Association one day record with a 5 fish limit weighing 19.09 lbs.
They were the only team to catch a 5 fish limit and beat the second place team by almost 14 lbs!
For their efforts, they won $480 and another $120 for catching the tournament big fish at 5.21 lbs.
The real contest was for places 2 through 5 with only a few tenths separating each of those places.
The Kansas team of Bryan and Kenneth Garrison from Kismet won 2nd and $300 with 2 fish weighing 5.37 lbs.
Don Tollison of New Braunfels and Mike Robinson of Sanford claimed 3rd and $180 with 3 fish weighing 5.23lbs.
Dan Turner of Dumas and David Turner of Bristow, OK were 4th with 3 fish weighing 4.97 lbs.
Bobby and Gary Reining of Panhandle finished 5th with 1 fish weighing 4.78 lbs The rest of the top nine were: 6th John McWilliams and Kenneth Sibley of Borger with 2 fish weighing 3.24 lbs 7th David Wilkinson of Fritch and Russell Wilkinson of Amarillo with 2 fish weighing 1.74 lbs 8th Jim Welch of Fritch and James Welch of Albuquerque, NM with 1 fish weighing 1.2 lbs 9th Kevin and Kalin Audrain of Fritch with 1 fish weighing 1.03 lbs.
All but one fish were successfully released back into the lake.
