The date, May 17th. The place, Keyhole reservoir and what laid ahead for the anglers of the Wyoming Walleye Circuit was going to be great.

The stage was set for the first stop on the Wyoming Walleye trail which began with the rules meeting Friday afternoon. All of the anglers knew that trophy Walleye were biting and they were like kids on Christmas Eve anxiously waiting to begin competition the next day.

Excitement was in the air Saturday morning, the day began with our tribute to the flag and to all of the men and women that made it possible for our competition to take place.

Boat number one was called and one by one each angling team sped off with hopes of getting on those tournament winning Walleye that everyone knew were active. I followed the field out and right away the team of Cody and Richard Carpenter came to the weigh station with a beauty. From that point it was one great Walleye after another. As the day one weights began to come in it was the Carpenter team from Casper Wyoming coming in with a total weight that may only be seen on Lake Erie, 41.6 pounds (Five fish). Unbelievable five of the most beautiful Walleye I have ever seen. Following close behind them were the team of Bill and Valerie Porter of Cheyenne Wyoming with another five fish limit coming in at 36.24 pounds. On there heels were the team of Rick Garner and Tom Kraft of Rapid City with a day one weight of 32.26 pounds. The great weights continued to follow with the team of Terry Weaver and Randy Adams with 27.06 pounds. In fifth place for day one was the team of Joe and Russ Hubbard with 26.68 pounds. All
very impressive day one weights. The excitement was now at an all time high with each team looking forward to getting back on the water to begin day two.

As day two began the fishing was a little slow to there surprise, but the Walleye that were being caught were tournament winning weight. As I watched the focus and concentration on each anglers face it was as if I were in the boat with them. Watching the differences and variations in each of there jigging presentations. It was very exciting to see an angler set the hook on one of these hogs and even more exciting to get it on film.

The primary presentation was a jig and minnow, generally a slow to almost dragging jigging motion. The wind came up in the afternoon and presented even more of a challenge to all of the anglers, making it very difficult to keep that slow presentation on the bottom.

As day two weights came in it was the team of Richard and Cody Carpenter with a two day total of 55.86 pounds. This team proved they had the skill and determination to get the job done and take the title of the Keyhole Governors cup Champions for 2008 with a winning margin of over 15 pounds. Second place went to the team of Rick Garner and Tom Kraft with a weight of 40.08. Third place belonged to the team of Bill and Valerie Porter with a weight of 39.76 pounds. Fourth went to Joe and Russ Hubbard with 38.86 pounds, and to finish up the top five was the team of Randy Adams and Terry Weaver with a total weight of 35.64.

Keyhole proved once again that she holds many great Walleye and the Anglers of the Wyoming Walleye Circuit also proved they have what it takes to pull those tournament winning Walleye from her depths.

It was great to see all of the Anglers after a long winter and to feel the excitement of competitive Walleye fishing once again. I’m looking forward to Glendo which I’m sure will produce hundreds of Walleye as it has in the past. The water will be in the trees and the presentations will range from jigging to crankbaits and everything in between. If you love Walleye fishing and have competitive blood flowing through your veins you won’t want to miss a single event. Hope to see you all there.

Rob Davis  (GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL)
