| Juls |
OK...Let's get this party started! Welcome everyone! Our Host tonight is Bruce "Doc" Samson! |
| Juls |
Doc, why don't you start out by giving everyone a brief bio of yourself.... |
| Bruce Samson |
The Doc who went fishing |
| Bruce Samson |
But I learned I like teaching and it pays the bills and buys the minnows. |
| Juls |
Here are some links for everyone to check out if your questions are not answered in the next hour...Doc's a slow typist. :) |
| Juls |
http://www.hightechfishing.com |
| Juls |
docbrucesamson@msn.com is his email |
| Juls |
What was the biggest win you |
| Bruce Samson |
I will answer any question by email after the chat if needed |
| Juls |
what was the biggest win you've had in your history of tournament fishing? |
| Bruce Samson |
RCL 2002 of course as it funded my career change |
| Juls |
How did you win that tournament? |
| Bruce Samson |
362,000 because I also won a PWT. |
| Bruce Samson |
maybe someday the prizes will be big again |
| Juls |
awesome Doc! How did it feel to win something that big? |
| twobearlake |
Hi everyone! |
| Bruce Samson |
Winning is not as enjoyable as expected because of the lack of sleep and mental fatigue |
| twobearlake |
Hi everyone! |
| moreyes |
Hi Doc, Kirt here |
| Bruce Samson |
Hi Kirt and all the others. |
| Juls |
Ok,, let's open it up to the rest of the guys...feel free to jump in everyone....I'll shut up now...heheh |
| Bruce Samson |
clock is ticking, ask questions |
| Juls |
let's talk about something near and dear to your heart Doc...electronics! |
| Juls |
Anyone have an questions for the Master Of Lowrance? |
| moreyes |
Dr Depth and Humminbrd do they work together |
| Bruce Samson |
yes a little we have a nice thread on the electronic forum going on it |
| moreyes |
I will check it out |
| Juls |
what are some of the coolest things you can do with your units Doc? |
| albe |
Per sure set up the editing in DrDepth that makes it allot easier for me now |
| Bruce Samson |
Finding secret fishing spots is the best |
| moreyes |
Anymore DVDs coming out? |
| albe |
what did you think of the latest update? |
| Juls |
I know you take a laptop out in your boat too...care to tell us what you do with it? |
| Bruce Samson |
I am working on a HDS DVD now as I have one in the house! |
| Bruce Samson |
Al DrDepth editing is nice |
| modog |
The new Lowrance digital units can be connected to an analog unit via ethernet, right? Does the new unit revert back to analog to 'talk' to the older one? In other words, sacrificing the digital advantage? |
| moreyes |
I really got allot out of info out of your last one |
| Bruce Samson |
The laptop in the boat is amazing. Some of you have seen it. |
| .Steve-In. |
if using 2 GPSs how far apart should antennas be Doc? |
| Bruce Samson |
I don't know on the antennas. |
| Juls |
For those who may not know...what exactly is Dr. Depth? What does it do? |
| Bruce Samson |
As far as I know the HDS will display the same sonar screen on the LCX models when connected withEtherNet |
| Team Clark |
Doc, this is George Clark from Thunder Bay, I fished with you at Dryden PWT 07, can you tell us what model of sonar would you recommend on the bow for fishing walleye and smallmouth |
| Bruce Samson |
DrDepth takes the data from a Lowrance log chart and creates digital depth maps for your Lowrance that look like a LakeMaster map. |
| Juls |
cool |
| Ray Champine |
Good evening everyone. |
| Bruce Samson |
Hi George, any model will work. |
| Juls |
Hi Ray |
| Team Clark |
what do you recomend as an all around model |
| Bruce Samson |
any HDS, screen size is dependent on your pocketbook |
| Team Clark |
thanks |
| twobearlake |
What are the advantages of the new HDS units? |
| Juls |
Hey Doc...someone on the message boards said Lowrance was coming out with a side imaging unit...what do you know about that? |
| Team Clark |
Doc, I know you are a Lowrance man, but what are your thoughts on side imaging |
| Bruce Samson |
too many and too much to type, I can summerize in an email if you like |
| Bruce Samson |
broadband, better maps, the new sonar cursor is much improved |
| Juls |
someone else said it was simply a 3D imaging...not side imaging... |
| moreyes |
It is amazing how fast boat electronics are changing, what do you see as the next BIG step? |
| Juls |
I guess I shouldn't say "simply 3D imaging" cuz that not simple...lol |
| albe |
Is there flash memory in the new HDS units to put in lcm made maps or do they have to be on a chip? |
| Bruce Samson |
The new sonar cursor activates the map cursor and you can see on the map wher the position of the soanr cursor is |
| Bruce Samson |
side imaging or something similiar is coming soon the 3D is the way they display masp and is good |
| cjbrown |
Doc, high speed searching in 30-45ft. water. What would be your typical settings, ping speed, sensitivity ect. What kind of marks would one expect? Vertical or horizontal lines marking fish? |
| Juls |
Ok, so they were both right. ;) |
| Bruce Samson |
The HDS just reads the LCM from the SD card |
| Bruce Samson |
hi speed ping 100 blue background increase sensitivity and colorline a little and the fish appear as vertical spikes |
| albe |
Then you need a two card tray to have a lcm chip and a mapping chip in order to have the lcm file over layed on the map |
| Bruce Samson |
I only have a one slot to test and the LCM overlays the background map which has the hot spots quality map built in |
| modog |
Should a guy seriously consider the big hard drive units for future needs? I assume there are more 'Plug-n-Play' add ons on the horizon. Anything that hasn't been made public yet? Hints? |
| Juls |
I hate acronyms...what does LCM stand for? anyone can answer if they know...thanks |
| twobearlake |
What speed do you drive when you are recording to make a Dr. Depth map? How close do you make each pass over the area you are recording? |
| Bruce Samson |
There are no more hard drives, the HDS has flash memory. |
| Bruce Samson |
I never know what is new |
| Ray Champine |
Doc, I see the new HDS units come with several choices of maps. Which map choice would be recommended? |
| albe |
lcm is the type of file that DrDepth makes and Lowrance units read |
| Bruce Samson |
i prefer 6 mph and 50-100 foot passes depending on the slope of the dropoff |
| Bruce Samson |
pick insight inland |
| Eyes_R_Us |
Are there some brands of SD card that don't work in Lowrance units? |
| Bruce Samson |
LCM stands for the format the Lowrance uses in displaying their maps |
| Juls |
You can ask fishing questions too....he's one of the best, so pick his brain! |
| Bruce Samson |
Sansdisk is best but most cards work |
| Juls |
LOL...ok, so you don't know what the letters mean either...just kidding |
| davis viehbeck |
Doc, what are your thoughts on Universal Sonar vs the transducers included with electronics for rigging at the bow? |
| Team Clark |
Doc, when slip float fishing, mono or braid, what pound test, thanks |
| Bruce Samson |
I have used Minn Kota's US2 for 2 years and it works very well for me |
| Bruce Samson |
I prefre Trilene XT 6 lb for slip bobbers except at Devil's lake tnen I need Fireline to jerk'm |
| Juls |
You won an event on Devils Lake...what were you doing to win that one? |
| Bruce Samson |
bottom bouncer and leeches |
| Bruce Samson |
The fish were deep that year |
| 620 |
slip bobber knots actually hold on braid ? |
| Bruce Samson |
rubber bands work |
| twobearlake |
good tip! |
| 620 |
10-4 |
| Bruce Samson |
on DL you make short casts |
| cjbrown |
I have had a problem getting spot on structure. I can mark it at idle and turn around and go back to that spot. But at times have had heckuva time finding it, as in wanting to stay on top of it. Any tips? |
| Bruce Samson |
use the sonar cursor to waypoint the spot or throw a buoy |
| Juls |
what's the problem davis? why do you keep popping in and out? |
| twobearlake |
MAybe he is imitating an internal GPS antenna??? |
| Team Clark |
Juls, some guys can fish, some guys know how to log in, and then there are us who can do both |
| Juls |
hahahah twobear |
| Juls |
lol clark |
| Juls |
I want to help him if he's having problems |
| davis viehbeck |
Sorry guys, bad internet connection tonight for some reason |
| Team Clark |
just spoke to davis on phone and told hiim to come over to my house |
| davis viehbeck |
I'm missing all the good discussion between reconnecting |
| Juls |
oh...sorry to hear that...did you get hit with that ice storm? |
| cjbrown |
Are you still guiding and doing on the water seminars? |
| davis viehbeck |
Nope, just fussy wireless |
| Juls |
i see |
| Juls |
Doc, you do on the water seminars?? That's a VERY cool idea! |
| Bruce Samson |
another good part of the HDS for some is that they don't have to use the LowranceNet if they don't want to because of the internal GPS |
| Juls |
what better way to learn all your computer tricks, eh? |
| Hitman |
What is your preferred weight system for crawler harness on a board? Keels, snap, other? |
| twobearlake |
If no one has other elctronics questions, I'm curious to hear Doc's take on Linder's comments regarding livebait vs artificial in tournaments. |
| cjbrown |
Ya, would love to spend a day on the water going over this technical stuff. |
| Bruce Samson |
yes I still do 1-2 educational trips on the water each year. |
| karma |
so what is the answer?? i was dumb enough to believe a salesman and buy a lowrance with internal gps, signal lost and signal aquired game....can i add an external antennae? |
| Bruce Samson |
I love livebait because of slipbobbers and I think if you eliminate live bait most touranments will be troling |
| davis viehbeck |
Sorry, I missed the response on universal sonar. How does it compare to factory transducers for bow applications? |
| Bruce Samson |
US2 compares well by my standards |
| davis viehbeck |
Thanks |
| Bruce Samson |
The new HDS is a better internal antenna than the 522 but you can still add an external |
| twobearlake |
Glad to hear that US2 works well. Just ordered a new motor with it. |
| karma |
how is that done?? i dnot see a port for an antennae? |
| Bruce Samson |
use the LowranceNet port for HDS I am not sure on the 522 |
| Bruce Samson |
I need spell check! |
| Team Clark |
Doc, do you update to newest Lowrance each year, or sometimes retain a good one for an extra year |
| Bruce Samson |
The new exteranl anrenna for the HDS will update 5/second and is supposed to be more accurate |
| Ray Champine |
Is Lowrance going to keep the 520 or 522 around for a couple of years? Kind of setting up a 2 tier system. |
| Bruce Samson |
I saved a 38c for this year. |
| Team Clark |
thaks |
| Team Clark |
the reason why? |
| Juls |
Don't worry about your spelling Doc...we "get" it. ;) |
| mnwalleyeguy |
anything interesting covered? I just got on. |
| Team Clark |
spelling does not affect your fishing |
| eyeman_1 |
Doc, I just got the 38 late last fall and haven't had any chace to really play around. ANy do's and dont's or set up tricks |
| Bruce Samson |
Once the 520 and 522 are sold out there will be no more. The HDS is their new platform for the future just like the first X15 was. |
| twobearlake |
How many events will you be competing in this year? |
| Bruce Samson |
no concrete reason to keep it except in case. |
| Ray Champine |
Thanks. It looks like if I want to update It'll be the HDS then. |
| Bruce Samson |
set up the 38 like any LCX model |
| eyeman_1 |
only got to use it one day on a river system but it was great. What would you recommend for the bow to interface with the unit |
| eyeman_1 |
a 522 |
| Bruce Samson |
I am waiting for the final AIM schedule to pick my touranments ILike the FLW REd Wing, Leech, and Winnebago |
| Juls |
:( you no likie Lake Erie? |
| Bruce Samson |
520 on the bow and LowranceNet so you can save a waypoint on the console and it will be on the bow unit when you drop the TM |
| .Steve-In. |
how did you like Cass 2 years ago |
| Team Clark |
yea, braid when in cover |
| eyeman_1 |
thanks Doc. was thinking similarly...still have the X15 on the dash ....just in case |
| Bruce Samson |
I can't compete on Great Lakes tournament becasue I fsih alone. I love fishing at Erie |
| Juls |
I see...:) |
| Bruce Samson |
Cass is easy for me, it is how I was trained to fish. Find them with the maps and sonar and sit on them |
| Juls |
What is your feeling about the "teams" in tournaments? Do you think it's a big disadvantage to the new competitors who don't fish with teams? Or...?? |
| twobearlake |
When you are fishing a specific "spot on a spot" will you use waypoints or throw a marker? |
| Ray Champine |
Doc, What is your "go-to crankbait" for trolling on Erie? rapala, Reef Runner, Salmo, etc... |
| Bruce Samson |
A beginner can not compete against teams |
| Bruce Samson |
waypoints and marker since each has value |
| davis viehbeck |
How long will you sit on a spot in tournament situation if you're marking them and not getting them to go? |
| Bruce Samson |
Salmo, Rapala, ReefRunner |
| Juls |
good question davis |
| Team Clark |
he sits just long enough to let Bill St Peter get to the spot he wants, lol, remember that one Doc |
| Juls |
hahahah |
| davis viehbeck |
I fish alot more bass tournaments than walleye so my approach is generally run run run, but in walleye it seems that sitting can pay dividends |
| Bruce Samson |
davis, tough question because it depends on many factors leading up to the decision. If it is a 8 lb spot it takes longer to move! |
| Bruce Samson |
yes I remeber but he deserved it |
| Bruce Samson |
sometimes looking for hot fish works in walleye touranments |
| Juls |
12 minutes left guys...get your questions in! |
| Team Clark |
Doc, two anchors versus 1 anchor and wind sock? |
| Juls |
We have a great crowd tonight, but only a few people asking questions...feel free to jump in everyone! |
| Bruce Samson |
1 anchor if it is big enough and you know |
| Team Clark |
us Canadians are picking his brain tonight |
| davis viehbeck |
What are your thoughts on the new biodegradable baits as an alternative to the real thing for presentations like bouncing with spinnger rigs? |
| cjbrown |
Doc, you do any ice fishing or are just a softy kinda guy? |
| Bruce Samson |
those baits work well on spinner rigs, years ago I found they worked better than crawlers at Ft Peck |
| Bruce Samson |
I am lucky, I don't have to ice fsih, I have enough other good choices. and lots of seminars |
| Juls |
What is your favorite place to fish Doc? |
| Bruce Samson |
LOTW Canadian side |
| Juls |
Where is your least favorite? |
| Bruce Samson |
Bays de Noc because the winning fish are too far away and the boat rides are brutal |
| Juls |
How many years have you been fishing tournaments? |
| twobearlake |
Do you still have time for "pleasure" fishing? |
| Bruce Samson |
22 |
| Juls |
wow |
| Juls |
that's a long time |
| Team Clark |
before you were born Juls |
| Juls |
hahahahah i wish! you're sweet |
| Bruce Samson |
I pleasure fish when i prefish at tournaments and each fall with my friends. |
| Juls |
who took you fishing for the first time? |
| twobearlake |
Glad to hear that. |
| cjbrown |
I wish you the best of luck in your upcoming season. Off to bed, have a flight to Jamaica in the am. SUNSHINE! |
| Juls |
awesome...nite nite cj...have a safe trip! |
| cjbrown |
Thanks for your time |
| twobearlake |
How did you first break into the tournament scene? |
| Bruce Samson |
1986 MWC Team of the Year and National Champion and then I was hooked |
| Juls |
cool |
| Bruce Samson |
I started in the MWC but I actually fished a Manion's tournament in 1984 or 85 |
| .Steve-In. |
what length rod do you prefer Doc? |
| twobearlake |
Juls, thanks for setting up this chat. Doc, thanks for taking the time to talk. |
| Team Clark |
Doc, out in open water on humps, what are your views on walleye chop versus wind direction |
| Bruce Samson |
8-9 foot bobbers 7 ft rig 6 jig |
| davis viehbeck |
Doc do you fizz, fin clip, use treatment, ice, add oxygen, etc in tournaments? |
| albe |
Thanks Juls. You made it happen. |
| Bruce Samson |
depends on depth of the hump and current so I don't always know fish are also funny at times |
| twobearlake |
Goodnite all. |
| Juls |
Thank you Doc for taking time out of your busy schedule to come and chat with us tonight...you did a great job! |
| Juls |
nite twobear |
| Bruce Samson |
I use all of what you mentioned |
| Bruce Samson |
good night |
| Ray Champine |
Thanks, Doc! Thanks, Juls! |
| davis viehbeck |
Thanks |
| reelxtc |
thanks DOC! |
| Juls |
feel free to stick around as long as you can....we don't have to quit right at 8pm.... |
| .Steve-In. |
clapclap clap |
| reelxtc |
cool |
| .Steve-In. |
Ty doc |
| Team Clark |
thanks Doc, best of luck this year, even though you wont wish anyone good luck if you are competing with them, lol |
| Bruce Samson |
I have time for a few more questions |
| eyeman_1 |
Thanks Doc |
| Juls |
it's just the offical log that Scott needs to post on the chat logs page...;) |
| Larry Mac |
Thanks everyone |
| Eyes_R_Us |
Tg |
| modog |
Thanks Doc, for visiting the site and answering so many questions over the year. Have a great season |
| eyeman_1 |
Doc, what part of LOTW on the canadian side do you prefer? I fish up around Big Narrows |
| Juls |
We have chat hosts lined up for the next month of wednesday nights....so, mark your calendars! |
| Eyes_R_Us |
Thanks Doc and Juls. My first chat - it was fun! |
| Bruce Samson |
Morson and I go in all directions from there. I like reef fishing |
| eyeman_1 |
me too...I like bouncers and spinners |
| Ray Champine |
Doc, I partly vertical jig and partly troll. I'll probably only be able to put one unit on this year. Is it feasible to set up a network and just move the unit as necessary? |
| .Steve-In. |
Is W still doing maps for you doc |
| Bruce Samson |
Waren still finds maps for us |
| eyeman_1 |
lol |
| .Steve-In. |
he's n ice man |
| Bruce Samson |
Ray you can do it |
| Ray Champine |
Cool! I can always add on later! |
| Juls |
Dang dog!! Gotta run everyone...thanks again! I appreciate your participation (even if you didn't talk...heheh) Thanks again Doc! Have a good night everyone. Hope to see everyone again next wednesday night. :) |
| Bruce Samson |
Ray you will want to power the network with a tee power cable |
| eyeman_1 |
later Juls |
| albe |
Nite Juls |
| |
This is the end of the scheduled chat, but Doc was still answering questions so I added this to it |
| Ray Champine |
good night, Juls. |
| Team Clark |
Doc, what is your boat this year |
| Ray Champine |
I was thinking about setting upthe dash, so that when trolling (after I get 2 unit) I could run each as full screen. |
| Bruce Samson |
Crestliner 202 TS again |
| albe |
How are the maps in Lake Insight in the new units? |
| Team Clark |
a new one this year, or same as last year |
| Bruce Samson |
Lake Insight are good, different look to them. You can get a feel of the lake better but they are not high definiton like Lakemaster. |
| blueranger |
wow hello fisherman |
| Bruce Samson |
new Crestliner |
| 620 |
doc, i'm looking at a new 525c, on Ebay, is that a good one to network on the bow with a 27, if so what would be a good deal. |
| Team Clark |
thanks Doc for sharing your thoughts with us, much appreciated |
| Bruce Samson |
It is a good choice but you get the wrong transducer. You don't want dual frequency as it is for salt water. |
| albe |
If I have a Navionics chip in a one chip unit like the HDS 5 or 7, is there any way I can put in a map from DrDepth? |
| .Steve-In. |
hi bb |
| albe |
Hi Bill |
| bill-brown(Ind) |
hi all |
| Bruce Samson |
Al I don't know yet. I will find out when i get my HDS 8. |
| blueranger |
hi bill, busy night. should of wore a tie |
| Eyebanger(OH) |
Hi bill |
| bill-brown(Ind) |
hi Jerry |
| Eyebanger(OH) |
Ice or snow? |
| bill-brown(Ind) |
over with now, got about 10-12 in |
| 620 |
ok, i would just network it in and use existing ducer , yes? |
| Bruce Samson |
good night if you have any questions later docbrucesamson@msn.com |
| .Steve-In. |
ty doc |
| albe |
Nite Doc |
| .Steve-In. |
have a good night |
| Bruce Samson |
620 yes but you will want a 200 kHz transducer in the bow. |
