Hey Juls, I'm using a buddies computer. |
| Juls |
Dang....sorry....had a power outage here.... |
| Juls |

| Juls |
Shall we get started now? |
| 620 |
ft peck ? |
| hot runr guy |
Pete, just wanted to say Thanks! for being a proponent of the Popeye big left arm tiller club! |
| Juls |
Everyone please welcome our Host Tonight...Pete Harsh! |
| HARSH |
Sounds good to me! |
| Juls |
Pete can you start out by telling us a little about yourself and your history with competitive fishing? |
| ozarkeyes |
with power steer- Olive Oil can do it now! |
| Juls |
Please name your sponsors if you wish too...;) |
| HARSH |
I did my first tournament in 1984. Did the MWC for a while. 1993 won ROY on the PWT and somewhere along the way became an old veteran of the game. |
| HARSH |
Ranger Boats, Mercury, Motor Guide, WalleyMasters, Lowrance and still working additionals for 2009! |
| Juls |
speaking of "year awards"...you just won the FLW's 2008 Angler of the Year Award...how exciting was that? |
| Juls |
What did that mean for you? |
| evy |
Pete, what is your favorite technique to catch eyes |
| HARSH |
It was quite an honor. |
| HARSH |
My favorite techniqure to catch Walleyes is whatever works best that day... :-) |
| Juls |
do you have someone to type for you tonight? You're usually a man of more words...lol |
| HARSH |
I'm using my buddies computer, he is typing for me tonight. |
| hot runr guy |
Pete, what's on the back of that 620T this coming year? |
| Juls |
if you could catch walleye on any presentation which one would you choose? ;) |
| HARSH |
175 Mercury Pro XS |
| HARSH |
Live Bait, it is definitely the most fun. |
| evy |
thats what i was trying to say thanks juls |
| 620 |
did they change the hull on the t for next year ? |
| hot runr guy |
I had a chance to run a Big Tiller 175XS this past summer at a Mercury demo, MAN!, will that thing put a smile on your face! |
| HARSH |
No, the interior was made more user friendly, the hull did in fact remain the same. It loves the increased horsepower. |
| Juls |
how fast can you go now Pete? |
| HARSH |
It put a smile on my face as well, it's been a long time coming....... :-) |
| walleye_69 |
what kinda speed can you get uot of that |
| HARSH |
I'll let you know as soon as the ice melts. |
| Juls |
hehehe |
| HARSH |
Should be in the 50-53mph range loaded. |
| Juls |
are you doing a lot of sport shows right now Pete? |
| CJBROWN |
still out run those tin boats............. |
| Juls |
are there any seminars coming up where people might be able to come see you? |
| HARSH |
I'll be at Frankie's Marine Friday, and Saturday and Sunday at St. Cloud's Sportsman show. Stop by and say Hi! |
| Juls |
cool |
| hot runr guy |
How about the Madison or Milwaukee WI sport shows? |
| HARSH |
Watertown, SD February 28th and March 1st. I will have seminars each day. |
| walleye_69 |
any shows in wisconsin |
| HARSH |
None scheduled thus far for Wisconsin. Never hurts to put in a request.. :-) |
| Juls |
hi stpper...welcome...got any quesitons for Pete tonight? |
| ozarkeyes |
is your boat delivered or do you come down and pick it up |
| Juls |
What is your favorite body of water to compete on Pete? |
| stpper |
Hi, not at this point, just wanted to listen for now |
| HARSH |
Boat will be delievered..... |
| Xswab |
Pete, have you run plastics on slow death hooks as a presentation? |
| HARSH |
"Any of the Rivers or Lakes of the great state of Minnesota." |
| ozarkeyes |
missing a good excuse to get on some soft water! |
| HARSH |
No, just nightcrawlers. I've used Power Worms on Spinners and have been doing it for years. |
| CJBROWN |
THe wayy plucked those pigs outta Erie last year, thought may put that one in there as afav |
| 620 |
two flw stops must make you smile then. |
| HARSH |
All 5 FLW Tour Events are making me smile. I'm definitely anxious to get going again like everyone else I'd imagine. |
| Juls |
What are your thoughts on the new AIM circuit Pete? |
| HARSH |
I have not made a commitment to AIM at this time. I am waiting to see the payouts, formats and final dates for the events. My primary circuit will be the FLW Walley Tour, but I would like to fit in AIM as well if possible. |
| Xswab |
What is your go to presentation during pre-spawn on large reservoirs? |
| HARSH |
Pitching jigs with live bait or plastic if shallow. |
| Xswab |
Deep? |
| HARSH |
Live bait rigs or vertical jigging. |
| Juls |
There was conversation on WC about "what if" tournaments went to artificial bait only....would you still compete if that happened? |
| HARSH |
If shallow when pitching jigs I like to cast a slip bobber out the front and back of the boat if two lines are allowed. |
| 620 |
why do you make that choice ? as live or plastic for pitchin? |
| hot runr guy |
if they allow 2 rods in MN, you gonna be able to grow another arm???? |
| Juls |
huh? |
| HARSH |
No, no I would not. We do not need to restrict ourselves any further than we already have been. The option of artificial or Live Bait should be left up to the individual angler. |
| stpper |
Pete, can you give us a idea on what you do to prep for a tourn. and how many days you pre-fish? |
| HARSH |
Depends on how aggressive the fish are. The fish always make the choice (In response to 620) |
| HARSH |
I like 7-8 days, that allows for 2-3 bad weather days and a day of rest prior to the tournament if possible. |
| 620 |
oh ok you said plastic shallow, live deep just was wondering how you arrived at the difference. |
| HARSH |
I pre-fish a little different then some. I try to find the spots or bites that have been overlooked so I can be left alone. |
| Juls |
do you work with other pros when prefishing? or by yourself? |
| HARSH |
You could do either depending on the depth. Shallower fish are usually more aggressive fish. |
| stpper |
If you could change any rule or format on the FLW what would they be |
| HARSH |
I have my friends that we brainstorm together. We do not share money, however. |
| 620 |
10-4, simple, thats why i'm workin at it. |
| Juls |
good way to do it Pete! ;) |
| HARSH |
I think they just did. 1 lure per rod puts everyone on an equal playing field. |
| Xswab |
what size /type hooks do you use for rigging, and leader? |
| CJBROWN |
Do you do any guiding trips? |
| HARSH |
I had two top ten finishes last year running 1 lure per rod, or 4 lures total; going up against guys who ran 8-12 lures. |
| HARSH |
4's and 6's and monofiliment liters, generally 4-8ft. 6# |
| Xswab |
Smile blades? |
| HARSH |
I have not used those much. Colarodo's and Indiana's have worked well for me. Not that smiley's don't work, I just have my favorites. |
| Xswab |
Thanks Pete |
| HARSH |
This year I will be guiding more and am currently booking. |
| Juls |
What bodies of water do you do most of your guiding on Pete? |
| CJBROWN |
How do we get ahold of your info? |
| Juls |
does Shadow go on the guide trips too, like she goes when you compete? :) |
| HARSH |
Minnesota Water. Email me through walleyecentral if you are interested. |
| HARSH |
Shadow is my Shadow. She is always with me..... :-) |
| eyeman_1 |
EB |
| Juls |
are you an NPAA member Pete? |
| Juls |
I love her. :) |
| HARSH |
No, no I am not. |
| HARSH |
I was a charter member, but did not renew 3-4 years ago. |
| Juls |
can i ask how much you charge for a day of fishing? |
| Juls |
if you do a shore lunch...i will hire you...hehehe |
| HARSH |
$500 for 2. It will be an educational day and we will fish until you puke. |
| Juls |
sweet...that's a great price! |
| Juls |
hi yellowbelly |
| yellowbelly |
hi |
| CJBROWN |
One lure and one lure only, what would it be, your confidence method? |
| Juls |
hi reddog |
| reddog |
evening folks |
| reddog |
Heya Juls. |
| Juls |
You'll be able to catch up on the missed chat when Scott posts the transcripts later |
| Xswab |
Over the years, what water temp do you feel (pre spawn) your odds on the bite improve on large reservoirs? |
| HARSH |
Seelhoff said at a seminar I attended, black and silver shad rap #5 or #7. That is really hard to argue with. |
| HARSH |
Stable weather to me is more important than temperatures. Give me a falling barometer or a steady barometer and the fish will bite if you present it at the speed they want it. |
| HARSH |
Upper 40's and stable weather will get the bite going just about anywhere. |
| hot runr guy |
Pete, is the back of the boat your domain, running a Vantage or EM TM? Or, do you move up front and use a bow mount? |
| HARSH |
Actually I use a Motor Guide transem and bow. The only time you'll see me on the bow is vertical jigging with two rods or possibly casting cranks or pitching jigs. |
| HARSH |
My Ranger 620 is my office in the summer time. |
| Juls |
there are NO DUMB questions...just questions...;) |
| HARSH |
Anyone fishing the Port Clinton FLW event? |
| reddog |
All you ever hear about early spring fish, low 30s water temps (33 on Sat) is about how slow your presentation needs to be, but yet, we fish plastics on jigs, and our presentation is anything but slow. Is that a reactionary bite? |
| CJBROWN |
As a co |
| stpper |
What type of motorguide for your bow 2009 |
| HARSH |
We jig through the ice and Walleye's will hit aggressively. I have caught Walleyes trolling in the fall and spring on Smithwicks where only the lip of the lure protruted from the fishes mouth. Again, stable weather is the key to reading the bite. |
| Juls |
What is your most memorable memory? I know you have SO many...but, does one stand out more than any others? It doesn't have to be while competing either... |
| HARSH |
36, 109# |
| HARSH |
Fishing with my Dad and Uncles. |
| Juls |
has Maggie the new pup been in the boat yet? |
| yellowbelly |
what is your favorite body of water and your overall favorite state to fish in |
| HARSH |
Competitively, winning is nice. The friendships I have made with other co-anglers and pro's would probably top winning long term. |
| Juls |
did you make it duck hunting with our uncle this past fall? |
| HARSH |
No she is still on an Oak Supplement diet. I have switched her to Ranger Upholstery yet... :-) |
| Juls |
lol |
| HARSH |
Yes, we just made some waterfowl jerky this weekend. |
| Juls |
get her some Kongs! |
| Juls |
yummy |
| Juls |
did you have her retrieving yet? |
| CJBROWN |
How old is shadow getting to be? |
| Juls |
Or did the old girl still retreive for you? |
| reddog |
If I need a new Gps, sonar for the front of the boat, should I take advantage of the deals right now, on the existing stock of the Lowrance units, or wait for the HDS units? I dont follow tourney fishing that close, and dont know who your sponsors are, but |
| HARSH |
Shadow is 11 1/2 years old. Maggie has been learning from Shadow at an incredible rate. |
| reddog |
what do you think about side imaging technology? |
| reddog |
sorry if this has been covered, just got here. |
| Juls |
cool |
| Juls |
no it hasn't redog...good question |
| Juls |
oops..fat fingers...reddog |
| HARSH |
Right now there are some good deals and if you need it now, I would check delivery dates on the new units before making that decision. Sometimes there are delays. |
| etec07 |
Looking for info......I own an Alumacraft Navigator 165 with an Etec 90 on it. It seems doggy when on the top end. Maximum 38m.p.h. Was wondering what kind of speeds and rpm's i should be running. |
| HARSH |
Side imaging definitely has my attention. Casting, bobber fishing places like Devils Lake or Rivers there would be an advantage. |
| HARSH |
38mph isn't bad, but by yourself you should be 100rpm below the red line of the Etec. |
| Juls |
Since we had a late start, we'll keep this going for another 10 minutes |
| yellowbelly |
what is your favorite body of water and your overall favorite state to fish in |
| HARSH |
Minnesota. And after 5-7 days I'm ready to change Lakes and presentations. I like new challenges. |
| reddog |
Preference: Live bait or not. |
| HARSH |
If you have any questions about Tillers, or fishing in general, email me and I will attempt to answer your questions. |
| CJBROWN |
What's your line of choice for trolling, are a braid or mono man? |
| HARSH |
Mono, lead core, braded line in that order pretending on the presentation. |
| walleyeflats |
What is your go to presentation on wingdams? |
| ozarkeyes |
what size rod you prefer for leadcore? |
| HARSH |
Frog colored hand grenades, chubs or crank baits. |
| HARSH |
7ft 10inches |
| etec07 |
When i turn the boat, the prop cavitates out of the water and I loose alot of rpm's. No other boat I have driven does this. Do you think the dealer mounted it to high? |
| ozarkeyes |
gotta run- enjoyed it everyone! |
| bill-brown(Ind) |
hi all |
| reddog |
bb |
| HARSH |
Yes, they likely did or you have turbulance under your hull. Sometimes a smaller diameter prop will help. |
| Juls |
Anymore questions for Pete tonight guys? |
| walleyeflats |
I would just like to THANK YOU day one on Erie was a blast |
| Xswab |
Thanks for taking the time Pete |
| CJBROWN |
Pete, thanks for the time and good luck this year. Night all |
| HARSH |
I am the one who should thank you! |
| reddog |
Thanks Pete. Good luck |
| etec07 |
Thanks for the info. |
| Xswab |
Come to Montana |
| evy |
Thanks Pete |
| Juls |
Ok then, let's officially end this chat tonight...Thank you Pete for being here tonight to share your thoughts and advice with us! |
| Juls |
clap clap clap clap clap clap |
| HARSH |
See ya on the water! |
