2009 Tournament News
Perry, Wagner Take 1st at MWC Lake Oahe by Dennis Kraus

The Kansas team of Jim Perry and Aaron Wagner held on to their day 1 lead bringing in a 2 day total of 15.72 pounds to win the 1st Western Division MWC on Lake Oahe.

Perry and Wagner worked together with another team from Kansas, Guy Ryan and Troy Ethridge who finished 2nd with a 2 day total of 14.32 pounds. Both teams were fishing the same area with the same pattern close to the city limits of Mobridge.

The pattern the two winning teams used consisted of trolling Bomber Long A’s along the rip rap of the rail road north of Mobridge in 3 to 4 feet of water. The teams put together the pattern and location earlier in the week and stayed off it until Saturday, with confidence that it would hold up for the tournament. These 2 teams were the only ones going into the tournament with a confident pattern. Both teams mentioned in an interview with Walleye Central that good sportsmanship contributed to their success. While trolling the rip rap today other teams yielded to their trolling course knowing that both teams were in contention to win.

The 3rd place team of Shannon Grismer and Colin Beitelspacher (12.10 pounds) and the 4th place team of Cory Jueneman and Brent Beitelspacher (12.04 pounds) mentioned that they were pulling crank baits also but were running them deep with lead core line. Most of the rest of the field were pitching or dragging jigs in water from 3’ to 18’ deep.

Several teams mentioned that even though the fishing conditions had been tough the past week, the hospitality from the local residents and business in Mobridge had been great and made their visit more enjoyable.

The Cabela’s Master Walleye Circuit will visit Devils Lake, N.D. for the second west division tournament on July 25 and 26th. The 3rd and last tournament in the west division will be held at Webster, S.D. on Waubay Lake on Sept., 12 and 13th.

www.walleyecentral.com will have live leader board coverage on all Cabela’s MWC west, central and eastern division tournaments.
