Jesse Buechel Retains Lead at AIM Event on Lake Oahe

August 13, 2010

Jesse Buechel of Fond Du Lac, WI leads the Akaska AIM Pro Walleye Series event on Lake Oahe by over 11 pounds after two days of competition. On day one he recorded 39.23 pounds of fish for a 7 fish limit, and today he recorded another 27.66 pounds of Walleye, for a two day total weight of 66.89 pounds. Jesse is optimistic about tomorrow, but isn’t letting it go to his head. “You know, if you’re asking me if I’m going to be sitting here having breakfast at 7 in the morning, absolutely not”, he says defiantly. Adding,  “I’m going to run down and bust it! You know, I had that big weight on day one, and any one of those two can crack that big weight on day three and knock me off, so nothing’s changed until 3 o’clock tomorrow. Then, I’ll just…I’ll relax then.” (Smiles)

Juls: How was your day on the water today? How did it go?

Jesse: It was good. It wasn’t as good as the last couple, but just by…I think that storm coming through last night, and (changing thoughts)  I think we had some more local traffic down there…which, was to be expected. It was a great bite, and instead of going through 150 fish, we probably only went through 75 or 80 fish. But, we spent a little more of the day, today, searching.

Note: Jesse and Tom Gatzke are participating in the Bull Riding event taking this evening in “downtown” Akaska.  Jesse rode a mean looking Bull last year that threw him off fast, and made Jesse look like a rag-doll as he flew heels over head off the backside of a big brindle beast!

Our next Pro was in second place after day one, and is still in second place after day two. Chase Parsons of Glidden, WI had a little tougher day today, but was still able to find a very decent limit of fish to weigh in. On day one, Chase had 30.77 pounds. Today, Chase brought in a 7 fish limit for a nice weight of 24.89 pounds, giving him a total weight of 55.66 pounds.

In third place is Jason Przekurat of Stevens Point, WI with 54.87 pounds. Before going out this morning he felt that if Jesse or Chase stumbled, and he could at least stay consistent, he felt he had a chance to catch up, and move up. Well, he moved up three places from yesterday, and only has three more places to go, if he can do it again, he might have a chance.

Robert Blosser of Poynette, WI is holding steady in fourth place after anchoring his basket this afternoon with a nice 6.34 pound kicker fish, that measured 25 inches. His weight for 7 fish was 26.25, and added to his day one weight of 27.27 pounds, his two day total comes to 53.52 pounds.

Rounding out the top 5 is Bruce “Doc” Samson of Minnetrista, MN with 51.73 pounds. On day one Doc had 28.60 pounds and today he brought in, figuratively speaking, 23.18 pounds.

The final day three field has been cut to the top 50% of the field, so in this event that is the top 26 Pros. Co Anglers were drawn to fish on the final day during the rules meeting, that took place on Wednesday, and met the pros they were matched up with this afternoon.

The “Kid’s Fishing Clinic” taking place on Saturday morning is sponsored by the NPAA and the AIM Pro Walleye Series. The following is the schedule of events for the kids:
8:30am: Registration at the Town Hall
9:00am: Kids meet the Pros and everyone goes over to the local farm pond that has been specially stocked for this occasion. The kids are expected to catch a lot of catfish tomorrow morning.
Kids fish and compete from 9:30 to Noon.
12:00: There is an awards ceremony and lunch provided for everyone who participated.

Marianne Huskey of Shawno, WI has been instrumental in organizing the NPAA “Kid’s Fishing Clinics” for the AIM Pro Walleye Series events, and has tirelessly donated her time to the effort. There will be a group of pros helping out with this event, but I do not know who they are yet, so I will report on that after the event on Saturday. We always like to give credit where credit is due, whenever possible.

Children will be giving brand new rod and reel combos, along with little Northland Tackle boxes full of everything they will need to get started fishing. In fact, it’s these same rods and reels that the kids will first learn to tie a hook and bobber on, and then fish with in their tournament. Good luck to all the little anglers…may the best girl or boy win!

I’d like to spend a special shout out to Nancy who has run the Akaska Bait Shop / diner / gas station for a gazillion years. Her business is the anchor of this small town of only 36 people (including children), and her bright cheery smile brightens up anyone’s day!

Tomorrow’s blast off will be at 7am Central Time again, and the weigh in will start at approximately 4PM Central Time.

Hope to see you all there!
