| | With temperatures going over 90 degrees, the wind blowing and a brief period of rain, 69 of the 72 teams fishing the MWC tournament out of Lake City, MN, managed to catch 267 fish today for 852.08lbs.
Leading the pack is Justin Schneider of Oakdale, MN and Aaron Sands of Lino Lakes, MN. “We had some real good fish going during prefishing,” said Schneider. Today the team was able to get a spot on a spot and had five good fish by 9:30am. They left the spot and checked second and third spots that had also held good fish during prefishing.
With two more tournaments on the river tomorrow, they wanted to be sure they still had a back-up plan. Knowing they had a good weight, they did not want to risk anything going wrong, so they made their way back to the docks by 11am.
The rest of the afternoon was spent preparing for tomorrow. Most of their time on the water was spent live bait rigging and they are confident in each of their spots tomorrow due to the current water levels.
Kevin Dahl and Steve Stack are sitting in third place after bringing in only four fish for 28.92lbs. They had a total of six bites today and lost two good fish at the boat. “We are happy with what we have,” said Dahl. “We had one limit in four days of prefishing and never had a fish over 23 inches.”
They are fishing a spot that has historically held big fish and are just hoping they are in there again tomorrow feeding. “We have a few other spots that were holding smaller fish, but they won’t cash a check. We are just going to go back and pound out that area,” he said.
Dusty Minke and Bill Shimota hit their milk run of six spots and put on 62 miles today to pull 25.12lbs, which puts them in seventh place. “It went pretty good today,” said Minke. “We had a rule that a fish had to be at least 20 inches to go in the box. The team had their last weigh fish at 2:45pm. “We did a lot of running and gunning. We lost a few fish, but nothing that would have made a difference.”
Big fish honors went to Eric Otto and Dan Braun with an 8.76lb walleye. They were followed by Dan Zwick and Tony Kobriger with an 8.70lb fish.
Following the weigh-in, over 75 kids attended a youth clinic put on by the MWC and NPAA. Kids received free rods, tackle and shirts. They were also taught how to rig a slip bobber by several MWC fishermen.
The final day of the tournament will be tomorrow. It will be a little bit cooler, with a high of 81 degrees and an 11mph NW wind.
The weigh-in begins at 3pm central time. Stay tuned to Walleye Central for final results.
