2004 Tournament News
11/02/04 - Texas Walleye Association Fall Classic by Texas Walleye Association

On October 30, anglers from five states gathered at Lake Meredith for the Fall Classic, the first tournament of the 2004-2005 Texas Walleye Association’s Season.

Earlier reports had indicated a fantastic bite at Meredith, but a series of low pressure systems and high winds two days prior to the tournament made for an extremely tough bite.

Dan Turner of Dumas, TX and David Turner of Bristow, Oklahoma claimed the 1st place plaques and $600 with 4 fish weighing 7.62 lbs. The Turners also won the $150 big fish pot with a nice 3.56 lb walleye. They caught their fish on white blade baits in 40-44 feet of water.

Robert Reining of Panhandle, TX and Brett Mills of Fritch, TX were a close 2nd with 4 fish weighing 7.37 lbs. to win $375. Their fish came on white and chartreuse slabs 39-40 feet deep.

Kevin and Kalin Audrain of Fritch claimed 3rd place and $225 with 3 fish weighing 4.88 lbs.

Jim and LaDonna Welch of Fritch finished 4th with 2 fish weighing 3.64 lbs.

The Audrain and Welch teams also caught their fish on white and chartreuse slabs at depths of 38- 42 feet.

Rounding out the top five was the team of J.D. Carr of Fritch and Ron Alexander of Plains, Kansas catching 2 fish weighing 2.97 lbs. on blade baits and slabs.

All of the walleye caught in the tournament were successfully released back into Meredith.

Needless to say, no one claimed the $25,000 bonus for catching a new state record walleye, but there will be another chance in the TWA Championship Tournament in June.

Special thanks to Panhandle Dental , CottonTop Oil, Audrain Heating and Cooling for providing the state record policy and Gander Mountain, Dave Kooser, and Kevin Audrain for providing the door prizes.

The next TWA tournament will be at Canton, Oklahoma on April 2.

The rest of the tournament schedule is Ute Lake on April 30, Lake Meredith on May 21, and the TWA Championship at Meredith on June 25-26.
