| | Bull Shoals, Ark- Not only is there an unusually tough spring bite menacing the FLW Walleye Tour anglers, mother nature is giving them a little more to think about as well. Strong thunderstorms containing high winds, heavy rain, lightning and even hail rumbled through the area late last night into early this morning making for a gloomy take off.
With the tough conditions prevailing 23 of the 104 boats brought in weighable fish. Nick Johnson and co-angler Jim Schleicher brought in 4 fish weighing a respectable 12.56 pounds to lead the field.
Most of the anglers were just happy to catch one fish. “I think I was just as happy catching this one fish as I was winning a $100,000” exclaimed Ted Takasaki. Ted came in with 1 fish weighing 4.44 pounds, keeping him in the top 7. 17 of the 23 boats that weighed fish came in with a sole walleye on the stringer. Big fish of the day was caught by Pro Kevin Goligowski and co-angler Jeff Sather weighing 5.56 pounds.
Tactics ranged from casting cranks shallow, jigging live bait to lead core trolling deep water. Some anglers chose to take the long haul as their strategy to try and catch some of the still spawning walleyes. “I put 169 miles on my boat round trip today” said one fisherman.
Weather still may play a factor in tomorrows contest as thunderstorms are still predicted to hit the area overnight. But with temperatures rising and more stable air masses moving into the area later in the week anglers are still optimistic about the bite turning on.
The Pro and co-angler pairings will change tomorrow in another attempt to out wit these tough Bull Shoals walleyes. Stay tuned to http://www.liveleaderboard.com for up to date weights and pictures.
