Ahoy Everyone,
Here is a new fishing report for this week. Lorain County Fishing Report- 6/17/98
Lake Erie, Central Basin and inland waters.
Walleye and Perch Lake Erie water temperatures along the Lorain County Shoreline are currently around the 70 degree mark and water clarity has been rather good. Perch fishing is currently still rather slow with only a few positive reports being heard. Lately, fishermen are reporting marks on their depth finders that look like good schools of perch in water 45 to 50 feet deep in many locations between Lorain and Vermilion. Walleye fishing in Lorain County waters has been modest to good with even some limits reported occasionally. Best locations are currently North of Vermilion 6 to 8 miles in water 48 to 50 feet deep. Trollers continue to out catch the cast/drift fishermen. Planer board programs and dipsy diver programs seem to be the best method as fishermen use Jet Divers pulling mostly small Michigan Stinger spoons in the purple, green and blue, black and purple, watermelon and silver/blue combinations. The majority of the fish are in the 2 to 4 pound class with an occasional trophy fish landed. Smallmouth Bass fishing along the rocky shoreline of the county is still fantastic with drift fishermen using jigs tipped with tube baits, night crawlers crayfish and large minnows. GO GET THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many fish in the 2 to 3 pound class with several in the trophy 5 and 6 pound plus class are still being caught. Work the shoreline both on the East and West side of the Lorain Harbor in water 24 to 18 feet deep. Steelhead fishing in Lorain County waters is not a factor at this time., however: a few hook-ups have been heard of off Vermilion and North of Avon Point in deep water over 60 feet deep. -Inland Waters- Black and Vermilion Rivers- Chappel and Beaver Creek-Huron River This week's occasional rains and thunderstorms have sort of kept the river and stream system changing as the precipitation in some areas of the county have kept the water levels changing. High runoff waters that are muddy really make fishing difficult. A couple more dry days from now and we can expect this fishery to become productive again. * Findley and Spencer Lakes-Oberlin and Findley Upground Reservoirs-Farm and Freeway Ponds Warmer temperatures are beginning to affect the inland waters as bass, bluegill, catfish and crappie catches are becoming stable and productive: however the same rains that have affected the rest of the Lorain County fishing holes have taken their toll on the inland waters too. Most of the larger bodies of water have tolerated the runoff OK but if a river or stream runs into a small body of water the conditions could be rather difficult.
