**Team Dunn> Welcome Aboard Dan.
**putzeye> Welcome
**river king> welcome buckets
**ebijack> clap clap clap
**TerryMac> yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaa Buckets
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> hello everyone
**ebijack> welcome dan, how about starting us of with a bit of history on you
**Den> i know, but tell everybody how you got your nickname ,buckets
**river king> are you catching fish in erie now or is it later in the year there???
**Team Dunn> Dan, Were do you head for Big Fish in Mid-June?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> I run a 27 foot sport craft out of erie pa i have been fishing erie for 11 years but this is my 5th year chartering
**TerryMac> All species?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> close to shore dunn i like the west side of presquisle in about 30 to 50 ft of water
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> we get a mix of walleye and smallmouth
**Team Dunn> Head out to the Kelly Islands at all?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> to far i concentrate on the pa waters of the lake
**Den> too far dunn
**ebijack> dan, how many day's/week do you schedule for chartering
**m.n.obucket> has the zebra muss. helped or hurt the fishery
**Driftr> Do you go out of Walnut Or P. Isle
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i still have a full time job and i usually try to run 3 to 4 days a week
**TerryMac> What is reg. job Buck?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i feel the zebra muscles helped clean up the lake but it sure makes things tuff sometimes
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> 4 hours a week terry
**TerryMac> lol
**putzeye> dan, what is the earliest that the eyes turn on in your area.
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i runout of presque isle boat is to big for walnut driftr
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> you can start catching them by the end of april but prime time is mid june untill september
**ebijack> dan, how many persons in a charter party for your boat are required
**Driftr> how is the water levels at the Presque Isle launch?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> 1 but the prices stays the same for up to 4 poeple thin goes up from there
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i put the boat in at west pier two weeks ago and there was 6 feet of water under the boat driftr
**ebijack> dan, do you charter for walleye and salmon on the same trip?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> we usually get a mix of walleye steelies and salmon because of the deep water at this end of the lake
**Driftr> When do the Smallmouths start hitting?
**eyesrfn> are the fish able to be released or do you have to keep them?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> beginning of may usually driftr
**Driftr> I have to try them this year
**ebijack> dan, do you troll for smallies?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> the fish will probably die after getting dragged in so we usually keep them
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> try shades beach or shore wood driftr you will see us in there some where just dont hit the markers
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> we do both , some people like to drift but i like to troll for them
**TerryMac> Dan, do you fish thermal "walls" thermo-cline , type locations...is that a big deal in eastern basin?
**Driftr> Thanks Dan, we will look for you
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> for steelies and salmon it is terry but the lake seems to roll over pretty often they dont seem to hold many eyes because of this
**TerryMac> thanks
**ebijack> dan, do you have a "goto" bait out on erie
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> we have trenches as we call them here deep depressions in the lake that seem to hold fish most of the time
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> my favorite walleye lure is for sure a stinger spoon in the green bubble color
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> a goto bait would have to be a rainbow trout or black and purple deep thunderstick
**Airwave(OH)> Good call Buckets...lol
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> no driftr i am not sure of the number is think it is sh28 but i am not positive
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> email me driftr after the chat and i will get the number for you
**Airwave(OH)> lol
**Driftr> i wondered if it was a copper base with green bubble
**ebijack> dan, do you troll one speed more than any other on erie
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> no it is silver drift
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> it is usually best between 1.5 for worm harnesses and around 2.1 for plugs
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> if you go to fast you get in trouble with the steelies
**Driftr> thats for sure Buckets
**ebijack> dan, do you run dipsy's? or just boards
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i run 4 big dipsy two on each side and 4 little dipsys on the boards
**TerryMac> Dan what is the main forage in your part of the lake?
**ebijack> why dipsy's on the boards
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> the fish are usually suspended for around 30 to 50 feet down ,we have found that dipsys on the boards is the most productive way to get them
**ebijack> dan, what made you decide to charter
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> well it kinda goes with how i got my name
**ebijack> an excuse to fish more? :)
**ebijack> ok...so how did you get your name dan
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i used to first mate for a guy and he was a goof so i used to sit on a bucket and fish in the morning he used to go out past me and say you will never be nothing but a bucket fisherman so i got a license and i took the nick name
buckets on
**ebijack> :)
**TerryMac> llol
**ebijack> dan, how long did it take to get enough clients as regulars till you felt secure in chartering
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i have most of my customers repeat ,but the first two years i was on pins and needles
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> big boat payments ya know
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> a fully rigged charter boat can be some where in the neighbor hood of 50 to 90,000 dollars
**TerryMac> Yah only work 4 hrs a week reg job lol
**ebijack> dan, how early do folks have to book with you to get out in april
**TerryMac> Dan...how far ahead are folks booking with you, now that you been at it a while?
**TerryMac> lol Ebi
**shadow> dan, which side of the point is good for eyes early May?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> april is a slow month here in pa ebi not many active fish in the lake
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> most weekends are gone for the year terry
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> there are still some left in may and june
**Driftr> are the steelies hitting outside the streams?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> straight off the point is usually pretty good shadow
**TerryMac> Going well, then....Dan
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> yes pretty good terry
**ebijack> dan, about what percent of your charters get canceled due to weather
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> 10 to 15 percent
**ebijack> dan, do you supply meals etc with your trips?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> the boat can take some pretty big seas so we usaully can get out
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> no food ebi but we can with the executive package and we include fish cleaning in our service
**ebijack> dan, how about putting up your website address
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> http://members.bellatlantic.net/~dbuckets
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> everything that anyone would want to know about me the boat and erie pa is on the site
**eyesrfn> how many charter boats operating in your area?
**fishslut> what length rods do you guys use for walleye fishing?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> probably less than 30
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> there is not much pressure on the fish here in pa
**ebijack> dan, do you work with other charter capt's?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> they tend to grow a lot bigger here in pa
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> it is a big lake as you know and without each other sometimes we would all be in trouble there are a lot of good private boats that we work with
**eyesrfn> how much do the eyes move around or are they in the same area most of the time?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> it makes up for me not being out there everyday
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> generally one school moves on and another moves in but they usually run the same routes every year eyes
**ebijack> dan, do you plan on chartering full time soon?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> it would be nice but it will be hard to quit work
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i have it pretty nice at work but i would love to charter full time someday
**ebijack> so you enjoy your "other" job :)
**TerryMac> what is your regular job Buckets?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i work for the county that i live in
**Fishin'> How many people can you take out each trip
**TerryMac> thanks
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> up to 6 fishin
**ebijack> dan, do you run 2 trips per day?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> sometimes ,when things are hot but two trips a day is tough plus i dont think it is fair to the people you have out on your first trip you might only need a few more fish and you have to leave to pick up your next trip
**Fishin'> How do you keep everyone from getting their lines tangled up
**ebijack> dan, do you prefer a full boat of people or just a couple of folks
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> we troll fishin and me or the first mate sets lines out you can let some people help but some you cant
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> it doesnt matter ,i like taking people fishing most of them have never caught a fish the size that they are catching
**ebijack> who's your first mate dan
**eyesrfn> what is legal size and limit on the waters you fish?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> chuck has been fishing the lake since he was 5 his dad is a captain he does a fantastic job i am hoping he gets a license some day he will make an excellent captain
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> 15 inches eyes
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> most fish you catch are over that
**ebijack> dan, is PA a 10 fish limit
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> no only 6 ebi
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i feel that is even two many
**Fishin'> What kind of tackle you use the most
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> 4 or 5 is enough
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> as in what fishin rods lures?
**Fishin'> Lures
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> home made worm harnesses with dipsy divers with spoons coming in a close second
**ebijack> dan, do you use any of the superlines
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> no i troll ande tournament green
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> 20lb and 16lb
**Capt. Dave Adams> Dan, don`t forget about that piano wire
**Airwave(OH)> Opps do you run the Standard Stingers or the Scorpions
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i dont like wire as dave knows the only reason is most of the guys i talk to dont
**eyesrfn> do have a problem with musky or northern bite-offs?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> if i am getting the fish 150 back off the boards all they have to do is put there lines out the same we all run the same brand line and pound test
**Fishin'> Do you ever use downriggers?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> there isnt many muskies or northerns out in the lake eyes and i tie my harnesses with 50lb test clear ande they usually dont break
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> i have 4 on the boat fishin but i usually only use 2
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> unless we are tageting lakers steelies and salmon
**Fishin'> What do you use for lures when your downriggin Lakers?
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> stinger spoons orange green and the glow ones seem to work the best
**Captain Dk (Buckets)> the green glow jr thunderstick works for lakers at time also fishin
**ebijack> are there any more questions for our host tonight?
