I have never owned a depth finder, and have been looking for one for a couple of months. I have checked Cabelas, Bass proshop and verious auctions, and this message board. I have been looking at the Hummingbird 300 tri-beam finder, and the lawrance x85? why is the hummingbird so much less expensive? Any sudgestions or advice is welcome. Thanks for your time!!

lowrance has (in most cases) more power, more pixels (better picture if what your seeing) than hummingbird. lowrance had much better customer repair/support than humminbird. pin point has a couple of great units out there too. decide on what your needs and future needs are and buy for that..you shouldn't be sorry.
Time to defend Humminbird again. I got a 400x portable and it does everything I wanted which is mostly to identify the bottum and it's contents, namely plug grabbing stumps and brush. I fish a lot of recently flooded water and it will identify sunken barbed wire fences, sumac, buck brush and in a band that is the same distance on either side of the keel of your boat that you are from the bottum. It does NOT give you false fish symbols like some of the earlier models. 2- 6 volt lantern batteries last for 80 hours.(it keeps track of actual time of use) However, I am probably getting a Pinpoint system also for the pluses that system has.

Check out REED's for the Garmin 240. I think it is as good as the Lowrance X75. If you are going to the X85 I do not know enought about it. Garmin is trying to make their mark and are comming in lower than the big guys. They are also more user friendly.

I know the names of the rocks where 2 Hummingbird units lay next too. Save your money do your homework and buy quality electronics, such as Garmin, Lowrance, Furuno, etc. you won't be sorry!
Remember, you get what you pay for and Hummingbird is JUNK. That's why there is a hugh price difference. Junk is cheap - Quality costs but lasts and performs.
I've got the X-85 and what a unit it iz!!! When it sez there's fish, there's fish. Humming Bird leaves something to be desired. Spend the $$$ on the Lorance and u won't be disappointed.
Nuf sed.

My boat came rigged with a hummingbird on the dash and one on the bow. They both ended up underwater via my foot on the second and third trip respectively. I now use bottomline. A high quality product and will never use anything else.

I think this is one of those examples of ..."ya get what ya pay for".
Chatman has the right reasons....a very good answer to the question.

Is this really an issue?
Hummingbird VS Lowrance?
I would look at Pinpoint or Lowrance before I ever thought of throwing my money into a stiff breeze. If you want to say you have a graph / fish finder and do not want to spend any money go with the bird. If you want a unit that works and helps you find what you are looking for (fish) go with a better quality and more expensive unit. Like the one post says
"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!"
It is the truth bar none.

Hummingbirds are mainly for bird watchers and those bass guys. Seriously; Lawrance is hard to beat-great customer service- never liked the Bottom Line- send it in-we will only charge you a hundred bucks to upgrade to what it should have been in the first place. Well rip me off and call me stupid. Only once....
Lowrance is always a good choice. You may want to
consider the Lowrance X-75. It still has high resolution but costs a little less than the x-85.
Definitley though, I would go with the Lowrance over Hummingbird.

Hey, wach those slams on bassers. I fish both "eyes" and bass and I'd go with the Lorance every time, given those two choices. I have looked at the Garmin and find that to be a nice unit too. I've dealt with Bottom Line and their side finders are nice at times too.
You just have to decide what you want out of your unit and go and find the one that gives it to you. Quality is worth a buck or two.

I have a Garmin 160 and it is a pretty nice unit. It has temp as a standard option. it also has a flasher for a quick return from the bottom. I had one problem with it and sent it back and was suprised to get a new unit at no charge. No questions asked. For the money it is a great unit.
