I'm usually a muskie guy, but lately I've been intrigued by walleye fishing. Can a "good" walleye fisherman catch at least a couple of walleye each time he puts his boat in the water? Even under bad fishing conditions...(post cold-front/east winds)?

To answer your qustion - No!
I have had days where I couldn't buy a bite. When this happens I fish for other species.
I have a sign in my boat that says, "On days like this I wish I had C-4"! ;-)

A good walleye fisherman always 'thinks" he can put them in the boat, and when he doen't, he knows he'll get'em next time!!

Everyone has days where nothing works. I know I've had my share of no fish days. As I have heard before, "That's why they call it fishing, not catching."

On most good walleye lakes, you can put a few in the boat most of the time. But we all have those days when nothing works. And that's why God made beer.-lb

No, you see, you have to say, I catch walleyes all of the time when you actually don't. That is what makes a great walleye fisherman:)
Those days when nothing works, those are the days that I really play with my goodies(electronics). I do agree that a good walleye fisherman is ALWAYS optimistic!

No. Explaination follows.
A good fisherman ALWAYS catches fish when he/she is fishing.
A good walleye fisherman is a specialist fisherman and always catches walleye when walleye fishing.
If I put my boat in the water and did not catch fish and it is assumed that I am a "good" fisherman, then clearly I wasn't fishing. I may have been:
1. Checking the stretch coefficient of the fishing line.
2. Testing the fuel effeciency of the motor under trolling loads.
3. Confirming that the bottom structure has not changed since my last visit.
4. Washing my crankbaits.
5. Ironing out the coils of my worm harnesses.
6. Verifying that it can get really hot sitting on a boat on a lake in August when very little breeze is present.
7. Showing all that will watch that I can hold two fishing rods and drive the boat with my foot.
8. Eliminating unproductive water.
This is probably the short list.
A good fisherman has learned to equate "fishing" with "catching". Sure, you'll hear folks tell you "That is why they call it fishing and not catching!" These folks are either novice fisherman or great fisherman.
The fisherman scale is as follows:
. A novice fisherman does not always catch fish when fishing.
. A good fisherman always catches fish when fishing and spends the rest of the time in some form of practice.
. A great fisherman is a good fisherman that rarely practices.
So you see, sometimes I get my boat wet and will not put any fish in the box. If you come help me load my boat, I'll let you know if I was fishing or practicing...

If you give a Real walleye fisherman a good body of water , a good population of walleye, the proper equipment, time to test his presentations, then he and she will always catch walleye.
Definitions:
#1 Real walleye fisherman- A guy or gal who has spent so much on everything for fishing that somebody is gonna shoot them if they don't bring fish home to eat.
#2 Good body of water- Hard to determine good definition, cause it seems to be that the same body of water was great yesterday, but today when fish don't jump into the boat it must be bad body of water.
#3 Good population of Walleye- Twenty per cubic yard, all trained by Marine World on how to place themselves on the hook so that they would never come off.
#4 Proper equipment- One of everything ever made
#5 Time to test presentation- a month should do!!- but this time always ends the day before the angler gets a nice mess of fish.
All joking a side. I fish for walleye some part of about 5-6 days a week. For a week and a half I catch walleye like a PRO
and then like this last three days I struggle to put a legal one in the boat. I fished musky for 8 years religiously, and I would say they are very similar critters. I have had 11 musky days and I've had three day periods when one follow was the whole deal. If you become a walleye fanatic, you will find out that they usually are in much bigger numbers and this means better percentages for numbers. When I picked my wife up today, the first thing I said was the next time I get smart about how "great" a walleye fisherman I am -remind me of these last three days. Lawrence Ecklor

Tarzan last see Tough guy other night. Tonto, Tough Guy and Tarzan go out to chase woman and drink what Tonto call fire water. Friends take Tarzan to place called Boom Boom Room, near place where Iron Birds Roost. In Boom Boom Room it very dark, pretty women dance for fat ugly men, on tables for something Tonto call wampum. Women have no clothes, Tarzan like very much! Tarzan say to you, Dont tell Jane! Tarzan get very happy with fire water and say Ungawa alot. Women no like. Big man named bouncer (looked like Gorilla with no hair) no like Tarzan say Ungawa. Tarzan try to stop bouncer from hurting Tonto. Tonto try to stop bouncer from trying to hurt Tarzan. Call him Keemosabe! Bouncer go nuts, and call rest of herd. Start smashing up place with Tonto. Tarzan take on rest of herd. Tarzan start doing tarzan yell to find Tough Guy. Tough guy not to be seen, until he come runng out of back room where nude women go to rest. Me not know but me think Tough guy was helpin women find clothes. Tough guy really nice man to help women that have no clothes. But Tonto and Tarzan need help more. Tonto, Tarzan and Tough Guy get thrown out into street by whole herd of gorillas with no hair. Last time Tarzan see tough Guy we all pass out in street. Then Tarzan wake up at home, feel like Tarzan got run over by elephant! Hey Tough Guy, where you go?

A good walleye "fisherperson" (See Ness & Juls, politically correct lingo :) ) on a bad day will just switch to cats, or panfish, or carp, or whatever else is handy or biting.
Ya just never know eh, ya may accidentally catch a walleye along the way?
:)
Backwater Eddy...><,,>
We all get skunked once in a while. In a tournament a few years back on day 1 I came in with no fish. I was feeling lower than a snake's belly in a wagon rut until Bob Propst told me he skunked out too. Hey, Any day I can tie the old master. :)
You know, Juls, there might be hope for Backwater yet. I think we're beginning to train him :-)))))))))

This was a good thread. I really like what JohnF and Mountainman added. That sums it up to me as to what is a walleye 'guy'. One thing I'll add, that I think we all can agree on is, that when you are experiencing a 'slow bite' day we all try to turn it up or down a notch to try to tweak a bite out of them. We know they are there usually.
It's similar to the Musky world. Switch to bigger, smaller, more action, less action, deeper, top water, throw throw throw, then troll, troll troll. We don't have options like that. When you are 'into it', you have more fun on slow days than 'easy' days because those days force you to become serious about the craft.
Adversity derives the best out us all. I have learn so much more from 5 bad days on the water than any good 10 days. (because it usually means we get on them good the next day!)
