The manual says to "run at 2000 rpm or approximately half throttle" for the first hour and for the second hour to "run at 3000 rpm or approximately 3/4 throttle." For the next eight hours avoid continuous operation at full throttle for more than 5 minutes.

Tried calling customer service the last few days after work and got the run around. Also checked the archives......

Does this mean to "set" it at half throttle for the first hour. My brother just put a Merc Big Foot with the same power head and it said to run up to half throttle but vary the speed ever 5 minutes to let the rings set up. I always thought you vary the speed when breaking in?

HELP! What is the correct way to break in this motor....I'm heading out in the morning.

Thanks for any replies....

I think you have a pretty good idea about what to do. I think the most important thing is to not hold it at a constant RPM. Up and down is the best thing, up and down to about 2000 rpms for the first hour, up and down to 3000 rpms for the next hour, then up and down to any rpm you want. Not to keep it at wot for any amount of time. I was told by the dealer mechanic that if you idle it all the time to start out with, it may suck fuel through the rings and into the crankcase. This is why several folks have the dreadded "making oil" syndrom. Up and down is the best at any RPM. I have about 5 hours on mine, and have run it at wot for periods of up to 5 minutes in the last couple hours. You will love that little guy, it is sweet....

Thanks.....Thats what I thought also....but it does say "AT" half throttle for an hour....not "up to" half throttle. Wish I could have talked to customer service.

Anyone else got any thoughts on this?

Something got lost in Japanese to English translation, maybe? :)

All they are trying to do is get the rings seated and dissuade the owners from running it wide open , or dead slow when the engine is fresh out of the box.
Don't take it out and immediately troll.
