View Full Version : Dipsys or Jet Divers
I have never fished dipsys or jet divers before. I heard someone say that you cant use any rod holders but steel. Is this true or can I use my Atwood plastic flushmounts / holders etc?
Thanks

Lee, You might get away with running the jets, but unless you use disposable rods and reels, I wouldn't try to pull dipsys with them! I came very close to losing a rod and reel (twice) before I switched to the RAM holders. There are many good ones out there, but I've been very happy with the RAM's. Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)

Lee,
You are asking for trouble (figure at least $150 for a typical dipsey rod / linecounter reel / line / hardware / dipsey / lure) if you run dipseys in the plastics. I know guys that do it but I prefer to do my gambling in Vegas. I'd recommend the rodholders by Vector www.vectorsport.com or Bert's Custom Tackle, or BigJon, or the type that clamp on to a railing from Lees (the best) or Perko for pulling dipseys. You can probably get by with the plastics for jet divers either straight or off boards but it is still not the ideal setup.
As far as what to learn first - I'd have to say DIPSEYS, then jets. This is from my experience on Erie. A good starting setup is to run 2 or 3 dipseys on each side of the boat and maybe 1 or 2 jets out the back - get them way back so they will be out of the way. After you are comfortable with the dipseys - start working with boards. The answer may be different depending on where and when you fish.
Good Luck,
Steve
