"Best times to fish" tables are published monthly in different publications. It's my understanding that many fishermen as well as charter captains adhere to these timetables religiously to plan their fishing trips.
I can look up sun rise/set and moon rise/set for my specific location via http://mach.usno.navy.mil
However, I have been unsuccessful to date in determining how to
calculate the two "major" periods and the two "minor" periods for each day. Based upon information I have found through the internet, major periods coincide with moon up (6 hours after moon rise) or moon down (6 hours after moon set) while minor periods coincide with moon rise or moon set. Then there is apparently a synergistic effect if any of these periods occurs simultaneously with sunrise or sunset. I can do the look ups and then identify good fishing times based on above mentioned criteria. However, when I compare my results to published solunar tables, I'm way off. Can anyone provide a rationale as to why?
Is there a science to determining best fishing days and times or are solunar tables comparable to "old wives tales"?
I'm hopeful someone can help. Thanks in advance. Jay
