While pulling cranks this past weekend, I was landing a fish on one rod and not paying too much attention to the other. After I got the fish in and released, I noticed that the line counter on the second rod was at 675 ft and counting! Upon inspection, I found that the drag had loosened nearly all the way and line was indeed exiting the reel. Is this common on the SG27LCs?? Is there any cure for this problem?? It sure made me feel a little uneasy the rest of the day, knowing that the drag may or may not work!!

Regards

P.S. At one point, I thought I had the mother of all fish on! I was watching the board and it swung back behind the boat so fast I thought is was going under. After a ten minute battle, I reeled in a 26" eye that had been impailed smack dab in the middle of the side! Kind of like pulling in a plank! By the way, that was on a Deep Little Ripper...go figure

Dave,

The topic of lossining drag on 27's came up about a year ago. If memory serves me, someone said placing a small "o" ring between the star drag wheel and the housing worked for them. Hopefully there is someone out there who has used the fix.

Happens to me all the time too. It's easy enough for me to remember test the drag, but it causes problems when my kids or others use them.

I too remember a post a long time ago, but it was before I had these reels so I didn't pay attention. And I think it was more like two years ago.

Hi Dave,

I have Fireline on my SG27LC's. That being said, I always keep my drag at the lowest setting (when flat lining), however, I always engage the "clicker" as soon as the crank is out. This way, it (the clicker) keeps line from going out, plus, as soon as I get a hit I know it. If I'm running boards obviously then I have to tighten down the drag a bit, but I still engage the "clicker". Even with the boards on if I get a hit the "clicker" will still usually sound. I know that some guys install an o-ring underneath the drag star, but I have yet to worry about doing it.

Take Care,

FJH

One more thing. Adjust that knob on the right side above the drag star. That adjusts tension on the spool(for releasing line cleanly). Sometimes it become 'loose' from wave pounding or whatever and can add to the problem you had.

I had that spool tension thumbscrew fall off on the Gunnel of my Lund yesterday from my Diawa. It does tend to loosen also. The drag has not given me a problem becuase I do the same by turning on the clicker. This keeps enough tension so the line will never go out unless a strike or a snag...

Does the spool tension thumbscrew have a spring inside of it? When mine came off, I did not see if there was a spring that fell out...

Yes - I'm pretty sure there is a spring in there

Yes it has a tension spring and a spacer. When you put it back together put some clear nail polish on the threads.

I just purchased 2 of these units this weekend (with the advisement of this board) hopefully I didnt make a big mistake. Most of the posts I read from the archives praised these reels as better than most on the market. Hope they hold up....
