The marina I keep my boat at has "rings" on the dock to which I tie my boat to. I normally tie several "overhand" knots, but with the wave action and boat movement they get so tight I have difficulty un-tying them. What is a better knot to use in this situation?
Thanks!
If you are tying to rings, the bowline knot is a great knot.
Quick to tie, and easy to take apart.
The following web site has this knot as several other very excellent knots.

If typing to a fixed post, the clove hitch works very well as well.

Been sailing for year..when not walleye fishing. The bowline is the only knot to use. Easy, won't come undone and comes apart when you want it to.

I think the bowline is the only thing I remember from Boy Scouts. Been 30 years and I still use it alot. Let me see......The rabit comes out of the hole and around the tree and back in the hole.......

I remember it from the boyscouts too. It is a solid knot.
I was not a boyscout so I don't know the bowline knot. I have always used a normal slip knot with 2 half hitches. When the line gets pulled tight, the knot tightens, but not the half hitches. So...when you untie the half hitches, then pull the tag end, you are loose without issue.

I use the bowline also but the slip knot with 2 half hitches in the doubled loop end is pretty good also.
The bowline knot is very versital it is also known as the rescue knot because it is a non closing loop and can be used to lift a person up and out with a rope like a swing to set in.
Bowlines will never slip and will always open up when wanted in almost any rope.
Perfect flip over a post rope loop or long loop for a cleat.

remember: "be trustworthy, loyal, honest and friendly. Courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent". Then tie a slip-knot. :)

Several options available. Since you moor your boat in same slip all the time, you can use docklines with a spliced eye on one end. Run the eye thru the metal ring and put the other end thru the eye and tighten then cleat the free end to your boats with a cleat hitch. Leave these lines on the rings at all time and carry another set in case you need to tie up elsewhere. Another good knot for tying to a ring is the clove hitch. easily adjustable if you need to take line in or out to adjust your lines and won't bind like other knots. I have also used a "sheet bend" . Although this knot is more appropriate for tying two lines together , it can be adapted to use on a ring and is fairly simple to tie/untie.
