Talked to the dealer on Tuesday,May18-reiterated to him that we were going to Lake Ontario on Wednesday, May26 and he promised the boat for me. I just called Friday at noon, guess what? Gee, we haven't started putting the engine back together, it don't look good for picking it up this Saturday. I asked, how am I to have the chance to break it in?
The silence was deafening....I said that I was promised on Tuesday and that all the parts were in-he said that they will do the best for me to get it done. Time will tell.....I know if I push, something won't be right and I be coming in on the 9.9 again, maybe from 8 miles out in 4 footers instead of a mile in a light chop, like when it first blew up.

Sorry to hear about your problem. (especially since I own the same motor) Did the dealer have a cause for the failure?

I was told that the reed cage came apart, went into #6 cylinder and it came out the intake-grenading the engine. They said they never saw anything like it-obviously a one in a million. This is the first one that I had heard of blowing up in years (at least from the posts on this site). I wasn't even running full RPMs when it happened. Lets hope the new powerhead is as good as all thge rest of them.

You have confirmed one thing that might just come as a surprise to many who regularly read the posts on WC... It's not just Mercury motors that have problems and issues.

Looks like one motor not thousands. Think Opti, then think again. Mercury makes a nice anchor. Evinrude makes a nice motor. Thank you for reminding us that Mercury's blow up. (Like anyone could forget)

Supertroller... post like this this seems a bit out of character for you. I take offense of Mercurys being a good anchor. I've owned nothing but Mercury and the biggest issue I've ever had on my main motor was replacing lower unit seals. The first boat I ever owned had a '67 Merc 35hp. the guy is still running it today.
I thoroughly believe that if it wasn't for the ignorant enviromental regulations pushed on the boating industry the problems that the optis had would have been worked out in the test lab. I know guys running the newer optis that will say they are the best motor they have ever run.
I don't doubt that Evinrude makes a great motor but as long as my Mercs keep running like they have I don't expect to get any first hand experience.

You're right Gilligan. I usually leave these posts alone but this one rubbed me wrong. Just because ONE guy finally blew up an Evinrude, this guy had to come on here and make it a brand name thing. We get enough of this crap on here that I just went for the jugular. I don't personally have a beef with mercury's. I've just always have had OMC and not had any problems either. I truly believe that they're all pretty good stuff out there right now and that's because competition makes them all strive for better offerings. The Opti's had a bad string off luck there for awhile but seems like they've got it worked out now. Sorry if I offended you or any other loyal Merc fan but "He started it!" LOL!
