Tom,
Are you talking Big Boards (mast & ski) or inline (offshore, etc.)? Either way they shouldn't be a problem. Key is to let the board rods clear all the way to the back center of the boat before bringing them in so they can't get tangled in the dipsey. Not quite sure what you mean by "40 pulls" but guessing you are not using line counter reels and a "pull" is roughly 2 feet of line out. If using dipseys and big boards at the same time, we usually use the big dipseys (size 1) to minimize the amount of line out required to reach a given depth to avoid problems with board lines. Dipsey bite around the islands has been hot but slowed some the last few days. With big dipseys and settings 1, 2, 3 a good starting point for feet of line out is 30, 40, 50 on one side and 55, 65, 75 on the other. Depending on speed and line type (diameter) You're probably not going to get more than 80 - 85 feet out on a 3 setting in this area. Many trollers are running the Michigan Stinger spoons behind the dipseys with success. Both the small Scorpions and the regular size. Any hammered gold/copper combo has been consistently producing as well as purples. Most popular setup behind boards is probably size 20 jets again with Stinger Spoons or crawler harnesses. Some guys are also still running Reef Runners. Make sure you run at least one bait up high in the top 5-10 feet of water. Stay tuned to reports on here and also check out Dean Clifton's "Denied" website before you make the trip. He has one of the best reports for the western basin. www.cliftond.com
Good Luck,
