Report as of 8/1/01: Central Basin - Water temperature off Cleveland is 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Fishing in the Central Basin has slowed as well with strong winds and a large pocket of cold water in the 60-degree range along the shore and nearshore from Conneaut to Cleveland. Best Central Basin walleye fishing locations include the sand bar off Lorain, 8 to 11 miles northeast of Cleveland and 9 to 14 miles north of Edgewater in 63 to 70 feet of water, and 10 miles north of Fairport in 70 to 72 feet of water. Walleyes are measuring 13 to 28 inches. Central Basin anglers are trolling dipsy divers and jet divers off planer boards with black/purple, watermelon, gold, copper, clown, and fire tiger stinger spoons and worm harnesses fishing down 20 to 40 feet. Steelhead trout in the 19- to 28-inch range continue to be caught by trollers.

Note: Despite the current trend in low water levels on Lake Erie, all ODNR fishing and ramping access facilities are open and fully operational.

Thanks for the report. I have been reading water temps of 63 lately in the Conneaut/Ashtabula areas. You just save me from complaining about my Pinpoint being off on the temp readings. What makes the cold water pockets show up?

I'm not sure. I ran into the reports while cruising the Ohio DNR web site for fishing regulations. I thought it might be halpful as i know a number of teams are going to have limited pre-fishing time.

You can get the same report by going to their web site and crusing around the fishing area. Not sure how often it's updated.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-01-01 AT 09:12PM (CST)[p]I've fished in that area the last 2 weekends and surface temps dropped dramatically from one week to the next. We fished the 65-75' depths and the temps dropped from 79º the first weekend down to 73º the 2nd weekend. I never looked at the temps near shore. Last weekend some local anglers said there was a 3-4 day period of strong east and northeast winds which must have brought the cooler water in from the deeper east basin. I saw a couple 30+" fish brought in but unfortunately not by anyone on my boat.

The ODNR fishing report is supposed to be updated every Wednesday. Other local reports are at Walleye.com, Gofishohio.com, and fishlakeerie.com
