I have a Tempest plus vented prop. About 33% of the time the prop blows out on the holeshot. Will taking the rubber plugs out improve this? They still have a hole in them but cover half the hole. Will this decrease the speed? Or should they be completely covered? Will that hurt the top end? Where can you get they plugs from? Thanks
If you are getting blowout on the hole shot, you have one of two problems.
1. You have the motor trimmed too far up. Most boats do best on hole shot with the motor trimmed all the way in.
2. The motor may be a bit too high. Simply not enough prop in the motor to give a good bite.
The idea of the vented prop, is that the prop SHOULD unload - to about 3K rpm on the hole shot. Then, it should really hook up and blast you out of the hole.
If you don't want the prop too unload and give you a slower hole shot, then PLUG all of the holes. This won't allow the prop to unload, and will keep the motor loaded all the time. This results in a slower but smoother hole shot. Also, when you are in the 2000-3000 rpm, range you won't be getting intermittent venting of the prop, as is typically the case with a vented prop.
Vented props work very well indeed to give a better hole shot for quick acceleleration, when carrying heavy loads, or pulling skiers.
However, many folks would just as soon forgo the quicker hole shot in the favor of a more uniform acceleration (albiet slower) and not having the issue of the engine revving up, with an unloaded prop from time to time.
Take care
