Lowrance units work well. If u plan on using this for fish I think u should look into a large screen makes it easier to work the hot spots.

I have a Garmin GPS12 and love it! Very simple to get used to and great battery life. reads through all but dense canopy and on the water you can home in(with little practice)on a spot as small as a car. I plug the power supply cord into my boat acc. and leave it on constantly to track schools.
Check them all out before you buy to be sure.

Both garmin and lowerace make good units. However if your looking for something very, very user friendly go with the garmin.
I have used both of them and Garmin is a lot easier to use. Plus Garmin has the WAAS on it's new units. They have the 76 model and the 176 for hand held models. There kind of hard to find in stores right now but you can order them online. Check out gps4fun.com. Prices are about 350 for the 76 and 450-500 for the 176. Basically only difference is the display size.
I ordered the 182 a couple weeks ago and am very pleased, this is the fixed mount unit. Buy the biggest display that you can get away with.
