Is it just me or is it HOT?
I think I miss -10!
With a low temp of 80 last night we are in for it again today, crotch pot cooking again, WOOO-Weee Son its gonna be a HOT bugger today!
So the heat is on and night fishing is definitely a option, a very productive and comfortable one at that through out these dog days and into early fall. Prep work for the fall walleye hunt, good practice really.
Recent days have produce fewer big cats & walleye but into the evening and night they seem to be eager to cooperate. Bugs have been remarkably kind this season despite the abundance of rain skeeters are still manageable, good deal too Eh.
I personally love night fishing, brings out the predator in me. Seek & go find, find and go eat, eat & be happy! At night everyone is either hungry or food, I prefer to be hungry & not the food.
No I don't have heat stroke folks. I just wanted to open a forum on night fishing and see where it go's. Questions and/or tip's feel free to share them so we all can be less hungry and less food for the skeeters.
Ya just got's to love that big old full moon up in the August sky!

Tried it for the first 2 weeks ago. I found that it is a lot easier to see the shoreline with the the latern off (keeps the bugs down too). We tried to pull crankbaits in 12 to 15 foot of water over some weeds. I think it really was a great experience, forces an angler to use other senses than their eyes.
I found myself using my fishfinder as my eyes and forced me to really feel the pole and what was going on at the end of the line. Seemed as if I could feel when I touched bottom or got some weeds on my crankbaits a lot easier.
I really enjoyed the experience and will be trying it again in the near future.
I am also intrested in hearing helpful suggestions or different approaches.
Good Luck and Good Fishing

I'm going cattin' right now with a cooler full of ice!!!!
Played two ice hockey games last week - actually got cold feet! What a great feeling!

B.E. you da man? Maybe. ;) There's nothing like night fishing during the full moon. The crayfish have light enough to eat round the clock and shed their hard shells as they grow bigger. The eyes like the little soft shell critters. The last full moon trip ended at the dock without getting the trailer tires wet. The eyes had a school of bait fish jumping out of the water at the ramp. A few casts and a limit of eaters was in the cooler. I had to work the last couple of nights so I couldn't get out. How about some reports from other guys that like to do the vampire thing and stay out all night? FISHING!

Right now, there is another reason to do the Vampire thing. The "Perseids Meteor Show" is just starting. Last night my buddy and I went out, and not only had a good nights fishing, but I seen two meteors. The show peaks on Aug. 12th, when there normally 50 to 150 meteors per hour !!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-05-01 AT 04:59PM (CST)[p]Yeah we noticed an increase in the meteor activity already while night fishing on Mille Lacs. Some very bright ones.
BE,
You know it's hot when you can go night fishing on the big lake and wear shorts and a t-shirt with a 10 mph breeze and not feel any need to reach for a jacket.
It was so hot I couldn't wait to leave the lake to get home to some real air conditioning. That's hot!

YOU KNOW IT'S HOT WHEN................nevermind, lets not go there again.
Last weeks humidity had me feeling like I was swimming out there with em. Bright moon and warm nights, I try to fish at least 1 night a week usually two.
I got a little jon boat tricked out with electronics, gps and trolling motor perfect for the smaller lakes and the rivers near me. I have seats mounted on the benches.
Here's the night fishing part:
Lighting seems to always have been a problem, so here's what I do. I take those mini push lights that are so popular. I've seen them as low as 6 for $5.99 and take 2 AA batteries. With velcro I mount the push lights on the bottom of the benches, facing the bottom of the boat. It keeps a nice glow on the floor of my little boat without having direct light going into my eyes. I then only have my running lights and my graph on. I have a white stick light I can turn on for direct light if needed. I also like the headband lights for hands free work when needed.
My question on night fishing:
What's the best size glow sticks to put on my tattle flagged Offshores, and where can I buy them?
For SAFETY I always wear a strobe clipped to my life vest, which is always on at night, in the vest pocket is a whistle.

You have some good ideas SIB.
On the subject of night lighting I try to go with indirect downward focused lighting. Lights that can be tucked up under a rail and placed strategically around the perimeter of the boat work best for working lighting. Stringing these on a separate circuit that can be dimmed is also a handy option.
A handy lighting system that may be a bit "funky" for some are the flexible diode lights that are in a rope form and can be purchased in 12 volt. Some have all sorts of extra light functions an colors of lights. Some offer lighting effects such as strobe or progressive lighting, you may use them constant on or off, or dimmed. They are very similar to accent lighting used by car show buffs and are reasonably priced and easy to install. If you were to use all the special effects that some models offer on the water you may be responsible for a few UFO sightings on the lake. LOL!
Indirect working lights paired up with a good head set hat light for close work and your set to go. If at all possable I use no lighting to limit my loss of night vision from periodic exposure to light. Black lights are another option that can be very handy while trolling at night or while baitfishing floats & set rigs.
A good spotlight is a must in my opinion, especially on rivers. I keep looking at a remote control unit but never seam to break down and spend that kind of cash for one, they would be very handy. Some models get very expensive while others are under $100, more my range. The safety edge would pay for itself fast if a guy avoids a lower unit knocker!
Just a few illuminating thoughts on night lighting, good subject SIB.

Ah, The ol' night fishin' thing. I have a hard time shakin' loose from the wife and kids but I did make it out for the full moon Saturday night. Beutifull night on the St. Clair River here in Mich. Only managed 3 small wally's in 4 hours (some bass too) - now the new moon 2 weeks ago was another story. I personally have never caught 'em that fast. Nice size ones too. Any comments as to the New vs. Full thing?
Yep, make sure you fish one or the other each month :)

With those walleye on the St Clair River hitting jitterbugs at daybreak you can imagine how good the fishing was all night. Should of left earlier though. Once those other fish woke up it was a real zoo out there. Thought I was Noah or something two by two....Noah heres another one! fish it out of the net son....

I heard that it was soooo hot last weekend that Patrick Ewing went to the Gold Club strip joint just for the air conditioning! ;-)
