Merc 35HP 4stroke Alarm

I am getting this third hand, didnt hear it myself.A buddy has purchased a pontoon boat with a slightly used 4 stroke 35HP Merc. I believe its a 2001 or 2002 model.Having problems with stalling,and rough idle and occasionally hears an alarm sound,a continuous beep. He has no users manual,his dealer hasnt looked at it yet. Any ideas what the continuous alarm means when it sounds?

Could be overheating. Is there water coming out the small hole on the engine? They also have alarms for low oil>

Yes ,water coming out of peehole. I know that different types of alarms meant different things...Continuous,intermitant etc. Was needing to know what the continuous was indicating.
