Going up to Ontario the 1st of Sept. for 2 weeks. There's a full moon on Sept. 2nd. Can anyone tell me what affect the full moon has on walleyes? Feeding patterns, location, best time to fish etc.? Thanks
I was told once that on a fuller moon phase the walleye feed at night and on a dark moon phase they don't so they are more agressive during the daytime.
I don't think it matters much as long as you go and enjoy yourself. Good luck.

It has been my own experience that a full or nearly full moon extends the night feeding time. Most anglers notice a bite from about sunset on for 2 hours, then it slows. However the full moon seems to prolong the feed.
Sleep all day. Fish all night! Concentrate on the shallow structure. The crayfish can see to feed at all hours and shed their hardshells as they grow. The eyes love softshell stage crayfish and will be on a rampage in the shallows. My biggest eye (13.76) came at 11:00 pm off of a Bago reef during the full moon. The last full moon trip ended at the landing. A school of eyes had a school of minnows traped at the ramp. The minnows were jumping out of the water trying to escape. A few casts and there was a limit of eaters in the cooler for the family fish fry.
I fished the July New Moon and 2 weeks later the August 4th Full Moon. Same water - same technigue - same time frame (7:00 to 11:00)or so. Just my observation.....the new moon was remarkably better. Caught 10 NM - caught 3 FM. Anyone else? Comments.

My son caught his biggest eyes ever on the full moon July 5th after sunset. These were as follows: 6,7,7,8 and a 9 lbers! I caught a 10lber on the same lake the night before on a full moon, no clouds. These were some of the best nights that I have ever had when I took my son out. By the way, he caught all the fish, I guided....he is 8. Some of you may have read my other posts about his fish, sorry about repeating myself but you know how it is to be a proud father...

Good like night fishing, but be careful. The Ontario MNR is trying to find the source of an extremely rare BUT VERY dangerous WEREWALLEYE. Werewalleye come out during a full moon to feed on livestock, moose or humans.

Don't know about the walleyes, but my howling sure pisses off the neighbors! Might do more to scare off the fish, too. :-)
Actually, I have always loved night fishing under a full moon and have had decent success. The question is whether or not I have fished under a new moon and I don't remember, it was too dark.

Looks like we'll be taking a couple of lanterns up with us and try some night fishing. What do ya think, troll the shallows with floating rapalas? Hey Fuzzy, I got me a coors light "sliver bullet" for those werewalleyes! Thanks everyone, for the info. 23 more days!!!

Yes - long line troll rapalas, smithwicks over reef tops and flats, weed lines. Any good transition area. Remember to tip
the back treble with cow tongue or sheep heart for the werewalleyes.

Fuzzy!
That werewalleye is a wimp, when compared to Walleyezilla that resides in Fort Peck Lake. There are boats that are still missing as well as a pickup truck. Have a great day on the water.

Thanks fer the warning. I'd love to get out there someday and have really enjoyed pasts visits to Oahe and Sak. I want to target the giant sauger-sarus - when is the best time for them?
Your son will remember those trips with Dad forever. You must have created a fishing fanatic and taken a bite out of crime at the same time. If only more fathers would take the time to guide their kids to maturity the world would be a better place.
Try the jointed Mirrolures (mirrolure.com) or floating River Runts when you are long-lining the shallows also. Make sure you have enough speed so they have plenty of action. On most occasions I've found the Mirrolures and River Runts will out-fish the Rapalas.
