just wandering I am getting a new 1800 pro-v. I already have a 54lb 24 volt trolling motor. Will this be enough or will I need to go bigger
Thanks

Sully,

Bigger is better. I ran a 60 pounder on an 1800 for two years and it was enough about 90% of the time. This year I have an 80, and I like it a lot better.

I have a 24V 60# on a smaller boat. There have been a couple of days on windswept rocky water that I wished I'd gone to the 36V 80# unit.

Sully, I think there are two factors. The power factor has been addressed in the other posts. I don't disagree - get as much thrust as you can afford. The second is shaft length. I don't know what length your 54 pounder is, but depending on its length, you may be looking at something else anyway, to keep the thing in the water in a chop. In my mind, the same rule holds true for shafts - get as long as you can afford.

I went with the MinnKota Maxxum 74# (60" shaft) on my 1800 Pro-V and have been very satisfied.

I have a 74# 24v on my 1660, some say it's to much, but I say it's awesome if your ever in a jam..
