Sure glad I found this site it looks like a good one!
Anyways, I have a 2004 Sylvan ProFish 17' with a 115hp Optimax. I'm running on a 13 1/4 X 17 aluminum prop and am not satisified with the results. At WOT I am only 5100 rpm's with a max speed of 42mph (GPS). I feel I should be in the 5700 range. I would like to upgrade to a SS prop anyways, put what size should I try for all around use? I plan on using this 17 pitch as a backup.
Is the boat and motor brand new? Have you already completed the manufacturers recommended break in process and time?
Is the motor mounted all the way down on the transome or is it raised a few bolt holes? If it's mounted all the way down, raising the motor one or two holes will increase your RPM's approximately 100-150 RPM per hole. On that boat you should be able to raise it to the third hole from the top. If you do that, take the boat out again and see where your MAX RPM's are at.
If the motor's been broken in properly and it's already raised up, you'd probably want to try out a 15 pitch prop. That will gain you 400 RPM. Each pitch increase or decrease changes your RPM's by 200.

My boat/motor is new, and I did follow Merc's break in recommendations as my motor has approx. 15 hours on it.
When I went to pick up my boat, the salesman took me out on the water for an introduction ride. He origionally had a 15p aluminum prop on the motor, but it hit max RPM before we reached WOT and the warning system would go off. So he replaced it with the 17p which, when brand new, was running at 5000rpm. I figured I would see a significant jump in RPM after the engine was broke in, but in reality it only went up 200-300rpm.
The engine is mounted in the second hole from the top.
Will a SS 17p prop up the RPM's any? or maybe 15p of a brand other than merc.
I'm happy with the overall performance of the current setup (hole shot, top speed, etc.) but I would like to maximize the performance of this motor.

I have a Merc Tempest 18p Stainless that's in very, very good condition. I'd let it go for $150 if you're interested.
