Just got back from a 5-day trip using my new 50 e-tec.
The motor is very nice. It starts immediately--every time; runs very smoothly; is easy on gas; does not smoke much and is quiet. The nicest feature, though, is the trolling speed. It gets down to 0.9 consistently and does not seem to load up the plugs at all when trolling at slow speed for a long time.
I did notice a little smoke for a few minutes after starting. Once it was warm (3-4 minutes) I did not notice much, if any, smoke (but smelled just a little when the wind was blowing just right). Another WC poster commented on vibration. Yes there is some when the motor is idling at 600 RPM. But it was not a problem in my opinion--and it's even better when you throttle up just a bit.
Top end speed was consistently 31mph (although I did hit 33 when the lake was perfectly smooth). That's on an 18" Alaskan. I believe I could do better if I used a different prop but I was more interested in slow tolling so the dealer installed a prop designed for that (13 3/4" X 15p)
All-in-all, it's a very nice motor. Only time will tell if it's reiliable over the long haul. I sure hope so! A few people have been asking about this motor so I thought I'd share my experience with it.
