Just got back from a 5-day trip using my new 50 e-tec.

The motor is very nice. It starts immediately--every time; runs very smoothly; is easy on gas; does not smoke much and is quiet. The nicest feature, though, is the trolling speed. It gets down to 0.9 consistently and does not seem to load up the plugs at all when trolling at slow speed for a long time.

I did notice a little smoke for a few minutes after starting. Once it was warm (3-4 minutes) I did not notice much, if any, smoke (but smelled just a little when the wind was blowing just right). Another WC poster commented on vibration. Yes there is some when the motor is idling at 600 RPM. But it was not a problem in my opinion--and it's even better when you throttle up just a bit.

Top end speed was consistently 31mph (although I did hit 33 when the lake was perfectly smooth). That's on an 18" Alaskan. I believe I could do better if I used a different prop but I was more interested in slow tolling so the dealer installed a prop designed for that (13 3/4" X 15p)

All-in-all, it's a very nice motor. Only time will tell if it's reiliable over the long haul. I sure hope so! A few people have been asking about this motor so I thought I'd share my experience with it.

Whats the RPM running at WOT? I've been thinking of a E-Tec, 40HP, Tiller on my Lund 16-Rebel. 600 rpm is really down there, better than most.

What have you got on your Rebel Tiller now? I've got a 30 HP Suzuki 4 Stroke on my Rebel Tiller that I'm selling. The motor has only 65 hours on it and performs very well on that boat. I bought a larger boat but I'm selling my Rebel to a guy that wants to use it on a row boat only lake. He's not interested in the motor.

Kind of hard to see the tach when I'm going full speed (it's way in the back and down by the floor) but I tried to look --and believe it was at about 5700 at WOT.

As for idle RPM, the e-tecs can be set to idle at a variety of RPMs. Out of the box, I believe they are set at 850. You can adjust it up or down. If you adjust it down, I hear you can go as low as 400. However, I'm told there is significant vibration at that RPM.

I'd say the 40 would be great on a 16 Rebel. It's the same weight as the 50 and 60 though(about 230lbs.)--so keep that in mind.

Good luck, Trout

That's a great motor for that boat. Whay do you want to change? You'd be adding a 100 lbs to the boat. Altough your fuel mileage would improve.
