I have an older Eagle Magna II sonar unit that has quit working because the cable from the transducer is badly frayed where it screws in the back. Are the cables repairable, or do I need a new transducer and if so is it worth the expense. I am using a Hummingbird flasher in the interim but it is not really state of the art although it does give depth and if you watch closely enough fish are shown. Thanks in advance for the advice but please don't tell me to go buy an X15, they are definitely out of my price range.

george:
The cable is repairable as long as the connector works in the back of the unit and you can leave about a 3" or longer tail on it. Take it to a two-way radio shop in your area. They should be familiar enough with working with multi-layered to fix it. Good Luck!!

If you find that the wires are frayed, going into the connector, you might go to your local dealer and get an extension plug. You can generally get these plugs for much less money than the complete transducer.
Clip off the extended plug, and splice in your old transducer.
Take care and it will work fine.

I am with REW too. It is basically a simple coax cable and can be spliced with a standard connector for the cable size at your local electronics shop. The major issue is the connector. Get the extension as REW suggests and cut and splice away...

Hey George,
I have something you might be interested in. I bid on and won a Magna 3 eagle depthfinder on ebay. A friend of mine asked me to find him a good unit for up to $100 for him. So I started looking and ended up with the magna 3. After I win the auction I called him and told him and he said he already went out to walmart and bought a cheapo and didn't need it. Anyway, I have the unit on the way and the owner says it works great. If your interested in it, I will have about $100 in it. You can have it for that if you want. I'm sure the transducer would work on your unit if you wanted to keep yours for a backup one. Let me know at Chadk66@yahoo.com

Eagle/Lawrance has a fixed price repair policy. If you call their 800 number they will give you a price. So if your unit needs the scratches removed from the screen or there is condensation etc. etc. you get it all done for one price. I strongly suspect they swap the unit to a rebuilt so you get back an almost new unit with the latest software.

Thanks for the info everyone, I will get the unit repaired and use until she dies for good. Thanks for the offer Chad but when I buy another I will probably upgrade at that time. Good fishing from Rainbow country!!!

George I repaired my X-85 cable out on the water in a rainstorm after cutting it deploying the trolling motor. We just taped together and after 5 months I am still waiting for it to act up so I can repair the right way otherwise it will be a winter project. Splice it very easy.
