What is the general consensus for spooling leadcore. Do you fill the reel with leadcore, or do you put on mono backing then 10 colors or so. Also what is the everyone's preferred weight.
Thanks for the tips!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-01 AT 11:07AM (CST)[p]The answer is (as it seems always to be) dependant upon what you are trying to do. If you're looking to fish over 25' deep at summer time speeds you'll need a full core (10 colors). That requires a large reel. If you are running spinners or adding depth to deep cranks then possibly 3 colors will suffice.

I always put on 2 passes of mono under the lead core to eliminate slippage. With spliced in ie.2 or 3 colors there is often a desire to run the lead core back or put mono in the lake with it. In that case you'd probably fill the bottom half of the spool with mono.

Most pros run 18#.

Hope this helps. Remember you are fishing a no stretch line. Back your drag off and use a suitable rod. Good luck

Do you have any problems with clipping boards directly to leadcore? Have you used the new snapper clips with leadcore?

The Snapper releases will hold the lead core (or any thing else) but the drag of the lead core in the water from the boat to the board, makes that technique tuff unless you run the boards real close to the boat. Most long line lead core, ie. right out the back of the boat. When running breaks, most hold the rods which lets you continuously monitor your lure, and make subtle adjustments that help this be such an effective technique. Hope this helps. Good luck.
