I have a 1995 Yamaha 30hp oil injected outboard. It has been the best motor I have ever owned. The last time out though, When I started the motor the low oil / high temp indicating lamp came on. The oil level was fine and the engine was not hot. I checked for a clogged oil filter and that wasn’t the case either. The motor was getting oil because it was smoking but the built in safety feature of course didn’t let the engine rev past idle.
This same situation happened before when it was relatively new but When I took it into the dealer under warranty, The light did not come on. It has been good since until now. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can check myself before I take it in and incur a costly service bill?

Should not smoke at all remember these are suppose to be clean burning 4 strokes. I dont have one but try couple things I'll list from 4 stroke experience. Drain all the crankcase oil and let it sit. Check to see if gas is in it (the oil) it will come out thin if it is. The smell will tell you. Get a new oil filter if Gas did contaminate the oil filter. Check the manual for 1000 rpm max running speed, if there is, its an oil consistency problem. Put new oil in, new filter, new plugs, start only with it down, Tighten all the caps, Dont leave your hose connect while on the road, disconnect.
Some things to try,..

This motor is actually a oil injected 2 stroke. Sorry for the confusion.

Was it contstant siren or intermittent siren. Does it have a water separator?

After checking some manuals on constant siren alarm for my motors your problem looks like as you said it is overheating. What area of the Midwest are you from? and what dealer did you take it too? Try a temp wax pencil on flywheel nut/crankshaft to see if its overheating beyond the specs. Is the thermostat working properly? Also if your worried about oil, make sure you used an injector oil if the manual requires it. Also you can mix 50 to 1 in the tank as a precaution. Could be a water pump problem too, Also check the Flywheel and see if there is a short on the coil this could cause a voltage drop where your other components will not operate, Is Battery OK. I can recommend some dealers in MN. only.
Should be able to touch and hold your finger on that nut for 2 sec and then let go. If so hot cannot touch it, definite overheat.

Hey Whitetips thanks for the info. I'll give these things a try and if I can't figure it out I will take it to a dealer. I am from Canada.

Have the same motor, troublefree since new. Using the clues you give I would check the OIL LEVEL SENSOR in the oil tank. Perhaps you could TAP it or something with a Screwdriver. It may be stuck as a result of the motor being tilted up between outings. Only once I ran a bit low on oil in the reservoir and it would only run at idle until I topped it off. It was driving me crazy cause it was very rough and wavy that day and the rocking of the boat/motor would have it runnin fine one minute and stuck at idle the next.
