Hello,
I am looking at purchasing a VHF radio and am wondering what peoples comments are and which brands people like and why? Any comments on Rayethon or Apelco or other brands?

There are many good brands out there but in general, stay around or above 200 bucks and you should be buying a bit of quality. Look for items like "waterproof design".....doesn't mean you still shouldn't protect it ! Other handy items are "scanning" and mikes that allow you to change chnls. The single most important item when buying that radio is the antenna. Don't skimp on this one. There's one rule that governs all here.....height above the water. It would be hard to beat the Shakespeare Galaxy with a good s/s mount.

Just my two cents worth. I have a Uniden President 512.,,since 83 & no problems at all. Keep mike dry & diito on first reply for antenna also your ground is very very critical.

Check out the ICOM IC-M45 in Shoreway Marine INC. You could get a free catalog if you go to www.shorewaymarine.com They have some really good prices. Like the other guys said antenna and a good ground are critical.

Check out the ICOM M59, ICOM M45, Standard Eclipse , and Raytheon 210 at our site, http://www.threeriversmarine.com. Just click on the item for a description and prices. They are all good radios, check the features of each. The
Standard Eclipse has the most transmit power. We sponsor this board!

I wouldn't pretend to know which radio is best.
However, we have had very good luck with UNIDEN 1010 and 1020.

It seems someone told me that Apelco radios are built by Raytheon. Worth a look in todays day of growth by acquisition. ???
Raytheon is a great choice-try the 8500 which has all the bells and whistles or the Ray 52 which is your best buy with most of the features. There was a survey taken at a recent PWT event and 70% of the Pro's had Raytheons radios!!! It's the official VHF radio of the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail... I have ran them for years with NOOO problems. Two important things to remember: the larger antenna used the farther out you will transmit and receive; and keep the mike dry also mount the radio as far away from you gps as you can as you may encounter some problems.
