eye-raker,

1. Start filling reel with good ten LB test mono, a few hundred yards.
2. Connect backing of mono to leadcore with back to back uni-knots, or nail knots.
3.Three colors of leadcore then add a fifty-foot leader of 10lb mono.
4. Look in Precision Trolling for chart on Leadcore and begin your experimenting. Good Luck!
You'll love it, ounce you figure it out!!!!

W/ straight leadcore just strip about 2" of lead out and tie on the dacron. Start to reel until spool is full. Then I like to add 30' of fireline for a leader. I tie this on with a uni-uni knot. Strip about 3" of lead out of dacron sheath and tie the knot.

I dont use segmented lead much. The main reason peaople do is when running on planer boards. If you used straight lead the line from the rod to the board would drag in the water too much.

Also, You dont need to use a line counter. The main thing is to have a large capacity reel. which will hold 6 colors or so of lead. You wont need em all so you could fill some with mono backing. You need to determine on average how much lead will you need.

Remember, the faster you go the more you will need to let out.

Not true, many pros at Dunkirk were running 6 to 10 colors on inline boards with shallow runners. I personnally ran 7 no problem. Put on all 10 and splice in depending on your fishing situation. you can always put in a jumper when more core is needed. put couple hundred yards of good backing on first. Use the bright colored lead core, its easier to see the colors when the core gets wet, Not all brands of core are equal.
Good luck.

I use 27# Gudebrod (Fleet Farm) with 14# fireline backing (50 yds.) and the same for the leader (aprox. 8'). I spool all 10 colors on 320GTI Penn reels, they have a lot of line capacity and a good rate of retrieve with a good drag. I run mostly shad raps of various sizes and types, and find that at 1.5 - 2 mph (locator speed fluctuates) the baits run 4.5' per color. Use a soft rod as there is no stretch, but sensitive enough to see the action of the bait, I use the 8.5' BP Walleye Angler Dead Sticks. I just switched from 8.5' downrigger rods that worked quite well. I am going to try 18# next year to see if the smaller diameter will get me deeper per color. I might then add more colors to the spool if it will fit. At present its hard to get to 48'. I save my line counters for the straight fireline and just count the colors of lead. Hope this helps...Doc
P.S. I tie the fireline to the lead by pinching about 5" of lead out of the dacron, tie a loose overhand knot, insert the fireline to touch the lead, then wet and pull tight. Works great and heard about it on WC. Great info on this site...

As Doc said..the Penn 320's have large capacity and line counter capability isn't really necessary as each color is 30' making it simple to know the line out. Your Diawa LC's may be better used elsewhere. I am turning my 6 Okuma line counters into lead core reels as the counters don't work well and replacing them with the Diawas for more critical line out applications.
