View Full Version : A Real Fishing Question

Help me settle this, I have a Famous Daves dinner riding on the answer.

2 guys are fishing side by side in a boat, fisherman A and fisherman B. Unbeknownst to either fisherman A or fisherman B, a fish grabs the lure of fisherman A and immediately wraps itself around the line of fisherman B who then reels it in thinking it is on his line. After netting this fish it is determined that the hook in the fish's mouth belongs to fisherman A, but, as was reported earlier, was reeled in by fisherman B.

Simple question. Who's fish is it, fisherman A's or fisherman B's?
And why?
Thanks

Easy one!

It's 50/50. Each guy has a %50 share in the fish. Fisherman B couldn't have caught it on his own as it was on Fisherman A's hook. Fisherman A couldn't have reeled it in BECAUSE Fisherman B reeled it in. Besides they were in the same boat and I hate guys who won't share the catch 50/50 no matter who caught it.........that's if we aren't going to release it. I release them most all the time anyways.

The fish belongs to fisherman A. Fisherman B can not keep a fish he did not legally hook. Fisherman B was also nice enough to net fisherman A's fish for him. Now, if fisherman A can get him to fillet it for him, the day is really going good. Maybe fisherman B's wife will cook it for him too. Wow! Does it get any better than this?!!? Miller Time!

Might even be considerd "foul hooked" ? Might have to go back anyway? Anyone know the answer? LOL

Ahh, the hypothetical problems we play around with!!! Funny stuff,

I have to go with Fisherman A since he fair-hooked it and B only helped bring him in. But since it must have been a keeper, it surely had 2 fillets, one for each guy.

i would want to know why fisherman A didnt reel in the fish.
what was he waiting for?

your question is a good one, i couldnt give the fish to fisherman
A if he is spending fishing time digging in the licorice bag instead
of paying attention. and Bs fish could be considered "foul hooked"
...

disqualify the fish and worry about the next one.

I'd have to go with "A" as being the "owner" as the fish was fair-hooked by "A".

Then again...................if this was real life and I was with a friend..........fishing.......not at work............good day on the water........I wouldn't care!

I would go with fisherman A, his hook was in the fish's mouth.

I had a similar thing happen several years ago: we had 3 boards out, I was reeling in the outside one to change lures when a good fish hit it. I gave the rod to my friend and brought the inside line in to get it out of the way. After he reeled in the outside board and I removed it I grabbed the net. Pretty soon the lure from the middle board came in wrapped up in the line with the fish on it and he couldn't reel any further.

I handed him the net and brought the fish in hand over hand, it was a good fish and I had to play it out. Eventually I got it close enough for him to net. It turned out to be a nine pounder and he had it mounted. To this day we still laugh because he got to net his own fish.

Fishermen "A" is the rightful owner.

A's presentation, hook and location, make it A's fish. OF course one must be pragmatic if it is B's boat and you want to continue to fish out of it.... Or if B happens to be your significant other..
My 2 cents

If you absolutely had to decide, it should go to Fisherman A.

If Fisherman A wasn't there than the fish would never have been hooked.

If Fisherman B wasn't there than Fisherman A would have been able to reel in his fish without it getting tangled anywhere.

Although two buddies in a boat would almost always just laugh about it and share the fish.

I gotta go with Fisherman A.

Now, if you could get a decent meal out of the wager, you'ld be in good shape :)

This is most definetly Fisherman B's fish. He did the "reel" work. Unless of course it was a trophy fish, then it would be Fisherman A's fish. I had this very argument with my best fishing buddy on Erie about 10 years ago. Our deal was a bit different though. I was out walleye fishing with my exbuddy Kirk! We each had 2 rods going. One we were casting the others were in the rod holders. I moved to the front of the boat to cast off of the bow. As soon as cast out I notice Kirk grabbing MY ROD from the holder on my side of the boat. He refused to give it up eventhough I was right there. The fish was a 30" 10.5# walleye. Haven't fished with Kirk since!!

Just kidding, he's still my best fishing buddy!

I think most definitely it is A's fish, it was his line that it was on and the fishes fault for tangling the lines...........even though B reeled the fish in. I think B would be in violation for he netted a fish that wasn't legally hooked by him so that would constitute illegal netting.................ha Hope someone enjoys the meal......

I wouold have to say that it belonged to fisherman A since fisherman B didn't have a legal hook set. But if they were friends they each would get 1 filet.

Legally it's fisherman A's. But, in this case, A should just pat B on the back and say, "good job buddy, way to go"!

Just my thoughts...

Actually hooking the fish is the main thing, so I say A, eh.

WOW...you guys must be getting cabin fever already.
I think that they should get to shore and duke it out...whoever wins the fight, gets the fish.

Yep in my boat it wouldn't matter! Unless it was the largest, those always sort themselves out :) Stick out in the "sort also" besides that theres always the hooks points. The PEN is mighter than the sword!

Depends!

If B was one of my kids, my girlfriend, my boss, or someone who only gets out occasionally, then it would be theirs to count. If B was a regular fishing buddy then we would argue about it to our graves and enjoy every second of it!

I agree. Assuming this is not in a tournament setting, I don't think I would want to fish with anyone who asked this question or anyone who found the answer important. The normal situation in my boat, hunting party, whatever is that everything gets divided evenly and this is not a spoken rule as with my buds that's not necessary. The only time I ever ran into something similar was when one guest was constantly concerned who shot a pheasant when he and someone else both fired. He was never invited back.

May I become so good a fisherman that my stories are true.
