Just read an interesting new entry on Pascoe's site. This topic has been debated here many times. The article just sheds a little finer focus on some things to consider. David deals with boats much bigger than the std 16-20 footers here, but much of what he talks about scales down to our size rigs...we're all pushing a hull against very dense water.
Combine the info presented with the bow-on view & weight of boats such as the glass Targa's, Lunds, Rangers, Yarcrafts, Sylvans, Trackers, Starcrafts, Smokercrafts, Tuffys (these, among others, might be representative of broad nose vs narrow, light weight vs heavy, dry vs wet......) and it's apparent what the designers(or marketeers) of each hull conciously intended the boat to do, or not do. It's probably reasonably safe to assume(?) there are few design accidents left when it gets down to actually manufacturing a model.
While we don't have to worry too much about enclosed "interior space", some of our boats are made flatter & wider up front to increase storage room or a casting deck, though the extra storage or sq feet doesn't come without some cost. i.e The next time someone debates "more storage" take a look at the hull underneath & see where the storage came from...more storage might be at the cost of a rougher ride...everything is a tradeoff.
Useful hull design & performance info for your next purchase. (and no, this isn't an advertisment for Pascoe's site)
