What is best way to attach reef runner deep and shallow crankbaits to line. I tried several I just bought and they all seem to be out of tune. Do they just run a lot different.Thanks.
You are right

Reef runner track differently than any lure I have ever used. The work on what looks like the edge of being in tune.

Steve,
I use a small Berkley clip to attach them. But unfortunately this will not solve your problem. They are notorious for coming out of the box untuned and they become untuned quite easily. Very similar to the problems experienced with hot 'n tots. However, they are worth the extra time that it takes to tune them. get yourself a good quality lure tuner to make it easier and quicker. You'll become another avid believer in this lure if you give it a chance.

Ditto on the last posts. They have such a wild action, it's hard to tell whether they are in tune or not. I actually havn't played around with the tuning that much, but still catch lots of fish on them. As long as they are fairly straight, they work just fine. I use Tuff-line on my crank rod and just tie directly to the lure.

They come with a split ring, use it. I had some special colors made up for salmon fishing and told Scott that I would put my own rings and hooks on the baits. He told me that the baits would run much better with split rings on the eyes. I attach my leader with snap directly to the split ring. There is a commercially made tuner available, but I can't remember the name of it. Love them baits.

The tuner mentioned in the above mentioned post is called the "Lure Tuner." It is made by the Bucher Tackle Co. A very handy device in tuning lures. Beats the use of needle nose pliers. Don't specifically recall the net address for the lure. I'm sure someone will post the specific address.

Sounds like the Rush L show, but ditto to all above. Site is:

They seem to out fish whatever my buddies put on their rods.
I leave the split rings on and use a round bottom snap (about 5/8ths of an inch long).
To tune them realize they have a built in horizontal hunt. By this I mean they will kick out right or left periodically. This makes them more tricky to tune. Try to get them close with subtle turns of the line tie loop (If it's running left give it a slight turn to the right ans visa-versa) while pulling the lure with 8-10' of line out at trolling speed.
As a final check rip the lure forward and watch to see if it tucks and runs or darts left or right. Do this several times as a perfectly tuned Reef Runner runs straight sometimes and goes both ways an equal amount. That's the horizontal hunt that drives following fish wild. This last little tweek can be such a slight thing that you wonder if you've done anything at all, and the Lure Tune R helps.
Sneak up on the sweet spot and try not to over tune the lure. (too many bends make the line tie weak, and then it won't stay tuned).
I check all lures everytime I set them. A thrashing fish can knock any lure out of tune when it gets tangled in the net.
Reef Runners are one of the trickiest lures to tune, but once you've figured it out you'll be connected to what I think is the most effective lures on the market. They've earned that classification on my boat by simply out fishing the rest.
Good luck

The will always look like they are un tuned and all over the place when you get them in the water. They are untuned when they run waaaay off to one side or the other and do not track back and forth, or when they roll, like a barrel roll in an airplane.
