I am going to try fireline on one of my reels to longline troll with and I want a mono or flourocarbon leader, I have tied the spider hitch to double the fireline then back to back uniknots with mono and flourocarbon, I have tried several and the knot seems to break at about half strength right at the mono knot, also the flourocarbon seems to have even less breaking strength. Would appreciate any comments for someone in the know.

I tied 6lb flourocarbon to 6lb Fireline with uniknots, and tied on a jig with a palomar knot. Stuck the jig between some rocks. To try to get it loose, I wrapped the Fireline around a cleat and let the drifting boat break the line. The palomar knot broke. I don't understand the problem you're having. Maybe a vist to Stren's website to view their picture of uniknots would help. Their pictures are bigger than walleyecentral's.

I just talked to a guy yesterday at Cabelas that used a smallll svivel between the lines. Find one that will go thru the rod eyes.

flourocarbon lines must be wetted before drawing down any knot. Overdo it, I think it will solve your problem .

Switch to Seaguar's leader line - pure floro and make sure you wet the line. You didn't say what brand you're using but if I were to guess I'd say you're using Vanish?

I'd use a swivel. This will also prevent line twisting. And like everybody else says, wet your mono before tying a knot.

Definitely tie in a swivel between the fireline and your mono or flourocarbon. Keeps the fireline from cutting into the other line and also gives you the benefit of collecting any crap sliding down your line and keeps it from fouling your baits.

My friends and I often use a mono leader on braids and fused superlines while ice fishing Lakers in Ontario. I also do while open water trolling, raps etc. It sounds as though your knot isn't properly tied. I have yet to have or see the back to back uni fail.

I do a lot of long lining using both firewire and mono for my main line. In both instances, I've always used a leader with a swivel. Works great and easy tying. I get my share of the walleyes.
