I would like to supply my husband with a well-equipped tackle box as a surprise. We are moving to the beautiful UP of Michigan...north of Houghton...what should I buy for him. Many thanks for your input.

First of all you must be 1 good woman to be buying your husband a box full of fishing items. Ha Ha Ha In Michigan its hard to beat a box full of hot and tots, Wally Drivers, and jigs and plastic body baits. Then throw in some bottom bouncers and crawler harness's and he off and running. Good Luck on the move and enjoy the great UP wilderness.

Yes, the UP is da place! I live in the Detroit area and love going up there whenever I can.
What kind of fishing does he enjoy? Maybe if you can tell us that, we can give you some more specific recommendadtions. Although Spikehorn did give some good choices.
I'd suggest a gift certificate. I've got a lot of lures that I bought for myself that I'm not too thrilled with and even having another fisherman buy lures for me might not be a winning combination. Besides that, if he buys them himself and they don't catch fish, guess who's fault it would be?

Charl you might take that gift certificate idea, especially if he fishes a lot. No one knows better what tackle is really needed like a angler in pursuit of game without. Soft tackle box or hardbox would be a good start. Then add terminal tackle, like stainlees steel needle nose, hook sharpener, etc. most gift lures I have received are hanging on picture frames, being converted or in storage.

There ya go. Get him a fancy tackle box and hide the gift cert. in there somewhere underneath a pack of his favorite jerky, or maybe inside a new pair of socks!

Charlotte,
Not knowing if you are a fisherperson too but just to let you know what you get for the money.
A good tackle box runs anywhere from $35 to $70
each type of lure for minnow immitators will run anywhere from $4 to $9.
This may help you decide how much to spend. Even a $50 certificate from my wife gets a lot of "honey do's" done. He sure found a good wife that thinks of him like you do. BRAVO!

Usually only the individual fisherman knows exactly what he wants to stock his tackle box and for that matter only he or she knows what kind of tackle box he wants.
I suggest buying a tackle box locally (he could exchange it if it was not what he wanted) and putting cash in the box with a nice note explaining how you would have preferred to buy the tackle yourself but bla bla bla. You could stick in an item or two that you are sure he wants but it would probably be tough for you to buy all the items and avoid getting some that he would probably avoid.
Just my thoughts and I think your thoughtfulness on this matter is great.
Good Luck.

Charolette, This may not be do able, but if it is, it may be fun. Tell him you want to take him on a trip, but he won't know the destination. Then go to your nearest Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, or Gander Moutain. Book a motel room cuz he's definatley going to want to love you up.....:)

My wife did this to me a couple of years ago. I got a nice soft-sided tackle bag with a gift certificate in one of the plastic boxes. This made an excellent gift. I think you're better off going with a gift certificate so he can get exactly what he wants/needs, rather than banging your head against the wall (words from her mouth). There's a lot of stuff out there, enough to cause a great deal of headaches. You can always add a little something in with the certificate, like a digital scale, leatherman tool, fillet knife and sharpener, etc. Good luck and good moving.

As a veteran of many moons in the Northern Michigan outdoors I say this with conviction.
A Double Barrel 10 gauge shotgun. Cause when those black flies and Horse flies decide to feed, its either them or you! LOL
PS I would suggest a nice sized gift certificate at his favorite Sports shop, that way if it needs to be returned it was his doing. :)
